The Rise of ZEUS.

Congratulations to our sponsor Mr Brian O Sullivan, Managing Director of ZEUS. This Irish owned global packaging company has just announced a €27 million investment in Dublin and the UK with the creation of over 80 jobs.

Brien recently extended sponsorship as our main Sponsor and we were also presented with two new sets of jerseys. One of the sets in the traditional green and gold colours and the new away set in brightly colored purple and one may ask why that color but there is a reason and you can play your part in contributing to a most deserving charity.

Mr. O Sullivan, a man of great ideas and initiative and, of course, a Castlelyons man himself was hopeful that the sponsorship arrangement would be of mutual benefit as has entered into a charity agreement recently with two major institutions and we can help. Castlelyons farmers and, of course those in the area are being asked to buy purple silage wrap and net and help support Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin and The National Children’s Research Centre this silage season. Local farmers buying silage wrap for their silage will be able to buy the Purple Packaging in the Store in Castlelyons and show their support with the brightly colored wraps demonstrating farmer solidarity with the work being carried out in both institutions. Castlelyons play Fermoy in Premier IHL.

These are quiet hurling times on the home front in Castlelyons but nothing better to engage hearts and minds than a local derby and I see that our intermediate hurlers are down to play Fermoy in Fitzgerald Park next Tuesday evening the 19^th June at 7.45pm. Castlelyons are low in numbers as we even find it hard to field a team and no chance of Junior hurling presently. Lads are sitting their Leaving Certificate, a few have headed for some work and fun in the States, but the injury ward is full of players like Colm Barry, Anthony Spillane, Aidan O Sullivan, Darragh Lawlor, Ronan O Regan, Jamie O Leary and others all on the treatment table. Colm Spillane and Niall O Leary are on Rebel duties. What seemed a tame exit from the football championship in closer examination and as outlined by football Manager Donal O Leary at our recent meeting was a massive effort by available players as so many of our more established lads were injured.

Fermoy are going well as a club and especially their intermediate football and hurling teams. They top the football league on a runaway 15 points and a big win with a very young team over Carrigaline recently. While Castlelyons lead the Premier IHL Fermoy are just three points off us and they have a game in hand. We need all available players to hit form to have any chance this against this craic Fermoy outfit and who knows it could be a prelude to more as the teams could yet meet in the championship. So hopefully exciting days ahead.

Castlelyons GAA Weekly Lotto Draw of Tuesday 4^th June

This weekly Lotto draw was held on Tuesday 5^th June due to the Bank Holiday weekend and the numbers drawn were 2, 6,7 and 31. The Jackpot was €9,800 and there was no winner. There were eight “Lucky Dip” winners of €20 each: - Castlelyons Camogie, Margaret O Regan, Noel O Brien, Anne Moroney, Fiona Curley, Nelius O Mahony, Matthew Walsh, Fergal Crowley.

Castlelyons GAA Weekly Lotto Draw of Monday 11^th June

This week’s Lotto was held on Monday 11^th June and the numbers drawn were 9, 24,27 and 28. There was no winner. There were eight “Lucky Dip” winners of €20 each: - Breda Lynch, Donal O Leary, Bill Kelleher, Tony O Sullivan, Cory Ryan, Sean O Sullivan, Denis Granville and Alice Burke.

New initiative at County Board Meetings.

The Chairperson of Coiste Chontae Chorcaí Treacy Kennedy has introduced a new initiative at the monthly meetings by introducing a discussion topic each month whereby delegates can give their views on relevant matters. This month’s topic is titled “the most significant challenges facing clubs today apart from fixtures” and should provoke quality discussion. The Chairperson Treacy must be commended on this initiative as it has introduced a forum of discussion on present day challenges with the offering of solutions. Submissions for this topic were discussed at our monthly meeting and for the next topic we will canvass submission earlier from all committees.

Cork v Waterford Sunday 17^th June in Thurles.

A hard-fought Munster SHC for both Cork and Waterford to date comes to a climax in Thurles next Sunday. A win for Cork will see them in the Munster final as they have one win and two draws to date in the new set up. Waterford on the other hand are now out of the race as they suffered some cruel injuries, questionable decisions, lost two games and drew one which left them with just one point. However, the Déise are a proud race and love the camán. They will have a right cut of the Rebels again and it should be a great game. Best of luck to our own man Colm Spillane again on Sunday who is really motoring well as he drives into open country to strike some great points this year.

Then on Wednesday 20^th June we have another Castlelyons man, Niall O Leary involved with the Cork U21 hurlers as they take on Waterford in Pairc Uí Rinn at 7.30pm. Waterford were strong in this grade for the last few years, but this year Cork could swing it as there are several senior team members available. Our own man Niall is going well and will be fighting hard for his place as he starred for County SH Champions Imokilly last year at centre back. A win here would be yet another boost for Cork hurling so no doubt there will be strong Castlelyons support on Tuesday evening.

Field Development.

Great to see some new ball stops and the repair of other netting in the Pitch. The Committee are also pricing the erection of some new fencing which will enhance Páirc an tAthair Peadar Uí Laoghaire. The pitch took a bit of a battering during the bad winter but is now back in great order. Thanks to John Healy, Martin Dorgan and many others for all the great work. Our treasurer Donal Barry is making preliminary queries on some fund-raising activities which will be announced shortly.

New Castlelyons Safeguarding Policy for Castlelyons GAA

Castlelyons Juvenile GAA has as a priority the enjoyment and safety of the children in our care while playing Gaelic Games. As part of the recruitment policy of coaches we ensure all our coaches are Garda vetted and have completed a Child Protection Course. We ensure they have completed a Foundation Coaching course. Our Child Welfare Officer, Lorna Murphy has completed a risk assessment as to the risk of harm that could come to a child in the care of Castlelyons Juvenile GAA, from which she developed the Castlelyons Juvenile GAA Child Safeguarding Statement. This ensures that as a club we are complying with our legislative requirements in relation to child protection and for you the parents it outlines a clear set of procedures to follow in the event you have any concerns around child welfare in the club

The Safeguarding statement is now available on our Website under Club Coaching and outlines the procedures, policies and practices we have in place to safeguard children, as far as practicable, from risk when they are attending our games or other Association activities. It identifies that as a basic right we recognize that that all children have the right to be protected from harm. Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 4.6.18

Castlelyons back in East Cork JFC with comprehensive win over Aghada.

Castlelyons 1-10 Lisgoold 2-13.

Castlelyons effort to progress faded in the early summer heat of last Saturday in Páirc De Bríde, Rathcormac as a depleted team we were never in this one against Lisgoold. We started reasonably well as Jack Barry goaled after eight minutes to put us up a point. We then had a player sent off on a straight red and even despite the numerical advantage we had 0-2 apiece from Alan Fenton, Alan Fenton and 0-1 from Ciarán McGann to leave us tailing by four points on the score 1-3 to 1-7 on the short whistle.

However, in the second half we lost some of our better players through injuries as Jack Barry and Ronan O Regan and Aidan O Sullivan had to retire and Darragh Lawlor could not start either. Ronan Fenton added 0-3, Alan Fenton 0-2 and Ciaran McGann 0-1 but Lisgoold kept on the pressure to add on another 1-6 to run out convincing winners 1-10 to 1-13. Overall, we are going through a serious bout of injuries so lets up we have the numbers for the upcoming Intermediate and Junior hurling championships and leagues. We have East cork Intermediate hurling championship and some league games to play throughout the next few weeks and some important junior games. However, from a football perspective that’s it for 2018 and thanks to our management outfit of Donal O Leary, James Moroney and Maurice Carroll who could deal only with the deck they had but we were short.

Cork staying the pace and up top La Liga style.

Cork senior hurlers continue their unbeaten run in this year’s new look Munster SHC as they have now defeated Clare and drawn with both Tipperary away and Limerick at home. All games are high octane stuff in one of the best championships ever and none more so than last Saturday evening in the Park as Cork and Limerick played out a cracker. There were many heroes on both sides but Pat Horgan with a tally of 1-12 lead the way for Cork and he was closely followed by our own Colm Spillane who defended mighty all day. His overall style of play blended with powerful fielding of the sliotar and drive on for some scores are crowd lifters. We know that you are as good as your last game, but that’s three top ones and we wish Colm and the Rebels the best in their quest for glory.

Advice on Flares at Major Games.

The use of flares at Páirc Uí Chaoimh and all major games is on the increase without persons realising the danger. They are a breach of the Ground Regulations as they pose serious risks. These flares when used have a serious ignition risk and cause obscured vision to both the patrons and stewards. The effect of flares cause crowd movement and surges which can lead to panic and possible injury. The flares can cause full dept burns, smoke inhalation and internal injuries. Of course, when thrown and hitting off a patron wearing a jersey the flare can stick to the material causing severe burn. So please if you are an adult do not bring or use these flares at the big games and do not allow your children so to have or use them.
