Castlelyons GAA Notes WE Monday 10.12.18. 2018-12-18 13:00:00

Positions filled at Club Meeting of Monday 10th December.

Well folks the Castlelyons GAA Annual Monthly Meeting of Monday 10th December proved positive and the outstanding position of club secretary from the AGM was resolved. Michael Barret has agreed to give one more year. Donal Barry will act as assistant secretary and take up the position in 2020. While this twenty-twenty vision is good for the coming year please note that a treasurer will be required in time and some effort should be made on planning for vital positions in the club during the season.

Chairman Con Lawler announced that John Crowley, Sarsfields, would be the coach for the intermediate team for the coming year. It was outlined also that John Crowley who has had a lot of success to date would welcome all young hurlers including the junior team to his sessions. The question of team managers and selectors then arose. After some discussion a sub committee comprising of Anthony Spillane, John McCarthy and Ciarán McGann agreed to work on and select managers for all teams for the coming year.

A field committee of John Healy, John McCarthy, Martin Dorgan and Donal Barry was elected for the coming year. John Healy who arranged for sanding and reseeding in the autumn outlined that all was going well and while the pitch was closed presently it will be in good order for the start of the season.

There are two unfilled officerships namely Oifigeach Gaeilge agus Cultúr and representatives to the East Cork Board. Hopefully these will be resolved for the January meeting. However, from the Scór prospective we have missed out on one age group already and we have Scór Sinsir coming up in late January. Scór is celebrating 50 years of competition in 2019 and wouldn’t it be great to have participation this year especially from the parish of Castlelyons with should a great history and cultural tradition. Our Secretary is arranging to have a Quiz Team and we have a solo Singer, but we can have two teams or two solo singers. No doubt the Camogie have many talents and may be interested. We can have teams in all or some more of the eight disciplines of Figure/Céilí Dancing, Solo singing, Recitation/Storytelling, Ballad Group, Leiriú Stáitse, Instrumental Music, Set Dancing and Table Quiz. If interested please contact Michael Barrett, Secretary.

Congratulations to Bride Rovers U21A County Hurling Champions.

Congratulations to Bride Rovers who won the County Under 21A hurling championship in a tough but great win over Cloch Dúbh in Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday last. This coupled with their minor success augurs very well for the future of the Rovers Club and isn’t it mighty to see great hurling men like Brian Murphy, Barry Hazelwood, Stephen Glasgow and Barry Johnson and a few more remaining involved and putting their passion back into the game. Also, John Arnold lit up the Páirc with a blast of a song after the presentation. Incidentally we were treated to a cracking game in the Premier Under21 Final also as Fr O Neills defeated Midleton after extra time. This was and excellent result for the men from around Lady’s Bridge who are making serious strides in hurling this past few years.

Barry Murphy awarded a Sports Scholarship

Barry Murphy one of our bright young stars has been awarded a sports scholarship from the Institute of Technology, Carlow. He will be studying sports science. This scholarship is awarded to a person of exceptional sporting ability and Barry certainly fulfils these credentials as he is a talented soccer player, footballer and especially hurling having been part of the Cork minor set up in recent years. Barry is competing in first year hurling competitions in Leinster with the College and cannot play Fitzgibbon this year but he, no doubt will get an opportunity to avail of the training of the legendary DJ Carey and, also, the current Kilkenny trainer, Michael Dempsey in the College. Congratulations Barry and the best of luck in your studies and sports.

Castlelyons Strictly 2019.

Well folks Castlelyons Strictly will take place on Friday 17th May 2019. The quartet of groups organising namely the community centre committee, the camogie club, juvenile Gaa and adult GAA are providing dancers for the choreographer. There’re no revelations to date as it is all strictly secret. However, someone said about a mighty dancer from the doyen days of the Top Hat ballroom. She is believed to from the Grange area and has the support of a strong supermarket who will provide sponsorship together with energy and protein bars. Can’t get the name but they say she could be in the final shake up and make them impossible to forget her. Then there is this fellow supposed to be from around the Coolagown area. They say he has nimble feet and a strong body that was not made in soft comfort as he works the stick hard, the dumbbells too. They say he can burst into a blast of a song after a few oranges. Now this guy is not afraid as he is a direct runner so imagine his movement on the floor. It’s said they will find it hard to get a partner to keep pace with him but if they do watch out. Can ye help identify these two as I am finding it hard to place them.
