Encouraging win for our Intermediate Hurlers in County Division 2 League

Castlelyons 2-14 Carrigtwohill 0-19

Well Castlelyons involvement in the County Division 2 hurling league concluded with a most encouraging win over Carrigtwohill in the final game recently.

We needed this win as we were hovering low and finally finished ninth of twelve teams, winning four and drawing one game. This Division 2 League was won in style by Charleville as they defeated Mallow 3-16 to 0-13. They had only one defeat, by Kilworth on a score of 1-22 to 2-16.

Back to our own game versus Carrigtwohill. We were away and the Carrig pitch like the weather was excellent. We lined out minus a lot of our regulars due to injuries and holidays and Carrig were down a few too. The game was competitive and tough from the start as Carrig went into an early lead. We gradually came back with points from Barry Murphy 0-2 and Michael Spillane 0-2 doing well as we got good ball into the full forward line. Eoin Maye 0-1, Alan Fenton 0-1 and Ian O Riordan worked hard also. Our backs had to deal with a very lively Carrig attack, who were off target at times. In fairness this was due to strong pressure from our lads and good blocks. The half time score was Carrigtwohill 0-10 Castlelyons 0-6.

The team talk at half time was interesting, no doubt, as three traits were more evident in the second half. We tightened on our marking, showed better positional sense and our first touch was better. Jack Barry went long putting a few down the gun barrel and when the dust settled no better men to be at the end of the breaking ball than Barry Murphy and Davy Morrison and they banged in a goal apiece. We continued to play very well against the breeze and held on for a 2-14 to 0-19 well deserved win.

Team: - J Barry, P Roche, D Varner, B Carroll, R O Regan, C McGann, S Moroney, E Maye, R Fenton, A Fenton, A Spillane, B Murphy, I O Riordan and M Spillane. Subs: - D Morrison, S Fenton, A O Regan, N McAuliffe, D Tobin, Donovan, S Flynn.

Challenge versus Ballyduff.

We played challenge versus Ballyduff on Sunday, but it was a different story as a still weaker Castlelyons team plummeted to a very heavy defeat against Ballyduff who, like ourselves, are finding the Waterford senior league tough going. Mike Walsh was referee and did a good job on a wet and breezy day. We were a little stale took and took the wrong option at times against a much tougher and sharper Ballyduff outfit led well by county man Mike Kearney at midfield. However, we were short far too many regular players on the day for this standard of challenge game and well done to all that stepped up. Ballyduff are commencing championship shortly and in good order but if there was ever time, we need it due to so many of the lads missing games through niggling injuries. Nevertheless, it was great to see good commitment from young lads James Kearney, Conor McCarthy and Jamie O Leary who is getting back to fitness after long term injury. We still have the Abernethy Cup to play and no doubt a few quality challenge games will sharpen the team again as we are not out in the quarter final of the intermediate championship until 14th September.

East Cork Junior 2 Hurling League.

Bride Rovers 2-10 Castlelyons 0-13.

We played the Rovers in Páirc De Bride in Division 2 of the East Cork Junior Hurling League and suffered a three-point defeat last Tuesday evening. Conditions were good and the game started lively with no flaky stuff as the referee let it flow. We were 0-3 apiece on ten minutes with Shane Cotter 0-1, Darren Tobin 0-1 free, R Feeney 0-1 supplying for us, but we knew we were in a battle. Rovers changed play smartly leaving two inside and giving their chief scorer Conor Barry plenty room. He replied with two well taken goals for Rovers, but we did recover to score two points from R Fenton and D Tobin who concluded the half 0-1 a free leaving the half time score Rovers 2-5 Castlelyons 0-7. Over the course of the game our goalie Eoin O Neill did very well, made several good saves and his puckouts were good too.

Facing the breeze in the second half we picked up our game as our half back line and midfield dominated this half. Again, Jamie O Leary came in for the second half and done well as his game is improving all the time. We made some good switches which helped as well. However, Rovers held out for a three-point win on a score 2-10 to 0-13.

Our next outing is in the Junior B championship versus Erins Own on Friday evening 26th July at 7.45pm at a venue to be decided. We have played a lot of games this year in league and challenges and the lads are going well. This is a big test against an Erins Own club with both senior and intermediate teams, but we should be up for it. Best of luck lads.

Best wishes to Barry Murphy.

Well we will know the result by publication but best wishes to Barry Murphy who is a member of the Cork U20 panel for this Tuesday night as they take on Tipperary in the Bord Gáis Energy Munster U20 Hurling Final. Barry is the third man from Castlelyons trying for a Munster medal this year as Niall O Leary hurled so well with the seniors and Leon Doocey was on the minor panel, but Cork fell short on both counts. However, I cannot see this happening the U20’s who are backboned by great players and none more so than the Roche twins, Rathcormac, Shane O Regan from the ‘Hill and Liam O Shea, Lisgoold is on the panel also. Tipperary will be tough, but Cork should do the business. Best of luck Barry.

Caoimhe Grey Walshe runs to victory.

Well done to Caoimhe Grey Walshe who recently won the U12 600M All Ireland B Final in Tullamore. Caoimhe also won a bronze medal in her sprint distance on a mighty day in the track. Comhghairdeas to you Caoimhe, your family and St Nicholas Athletic Club.

Congratulations to Grange GAA Club.

Heartiest congratulations and well done to Grange who won a county title after a lapse of 40 years when they took the Junior B County Football title on Sunday defeating Goleen 2-4 to 0-7. This was a mighty victory for a team with such a small pick and kept going over the years by the likes of the Kelleher’s, Gowen’s, Roches, Barrys, Flynn’s, McCarthy’s and a small number of families. Of course, Ned Kirby was one of their greatest. Grange are great supporters of our Lotto and gave mighty support to one of their own, Cathy Drislane, who was a big fundraiser and performer for us at the recent Strictly Castlelyons. Well done Grange.

At a recent club meeting expression of sympathy were extended to the Fitzpatrick, O Neill, Donegan, Meade, Cremin and Murphy families. Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a nainmeacha go léir.
