Junior B Hurlers in East Cork Quarter Final.

Castlelyons 1-14 Aghada 0-14

We had a well-earned victory win over Aghada on Wednesday evening in Killeagh. We now play Dungourney in the quarter final on a date to be arranged. Our game against Aghada was dogged and hard fought as the result was in doubt right up to the final whistle. They came with a star-studded outfit as their team was strong and led by intermediate players Ger Melvin and Charlie Terry while amazingly buried in the subs at No 23 was Willie Leahy. Now you may ask who Will Leahy is, but I can tell you he is a crackin hurler who won two county medals with Imokilly and is already back staring with the Divisional side but eligible for Junior B hurling.

When the game started sure enough Willie Leahy took up position at wing forward and was marshaled by Jamie O Leary. We defended well but Charlie Terry and Willie Leahy had 0-1 apiece and they looked good. Brien Carroll and Ian Riordan were doing well, and Brian O Donovan slotted over a point for us. Chris Cotter had another for us after great work by Shane Cotter. Then received Ian Riordan a nasty injury and had to come off. Andrew O Neill replaced Ian as a blood sub and later continued. Aghada found hard as they tried without success for goals. Liam Moroney at full back did very well while Conor McCarthy and Redmond Walsh were mighty in the corners. Ronan Fenton and Darren Tobin had 0-1 apiece to leave it level at half time at Castlelyons 0-5 Aghada 0-5.

Aghada came out of the traps for the second half and struck for home with three unanswered points before Brian On Donovan had 0-1 for us but they went four points ahead before Chris Cotter had his second after hard work by Ronan Fenton. However, the expected take over by Aghada did not happen. Jamie O Leary as he had done throughout the game kept watertight on Leahy and assisted by Ciarán McGann and Shane Fenton our half back line got on top.

The last twenty minutes were hectic as Robbie Feeney and Brian Carroll supplied the ammunition for Darren Tobin who resembled a marine as he has fast hands and a deadly shot. He was accurate from both frees and play bringing his tally to 0-7. With time running out Tobin grabbed the sliotar and with minimum space sent in a great shot which the Aghada goalie failed to handle to send us up a goal. Fair play to dogged work by subs Michael John Dorgan and Noel McAuliffe who bowled over a few of the Aghada backs and they couldn’t clear the sliotar upfield. Referee Pa Beausang blew up for a great win.

These lads are enjoying their hurling and have really improved over the last few months. There is over a twenty-year age gap between the oldest and the youngest and ‘tis great to keep it going. We could lose a few to the intermediate team but overall having a second team ensures games for under 21 and fringe hurlers throughout the year and is good for the club. We wish a speedy recover to Ian Riordan who received a nasty injury and was concussed and has improved so much over the summer. Also, to our goalie John Paul Murphy who despite a shoulder injury was so brave to play through the Aghada game.

Team: J P Murphy, C McCarthy, L Moroney, R Walsh, A O Neill, C McGann, S Fenton, J O Leary, R Feeney, B Carroll, B O Donovan, R Fenton, D Tobin, I Riordan D Tobin, C Cotter, R Fenton, Subs: - E O Neill, M Murphy, S Moroney, A O Neill, M Spillane, M J Dorgan, N McAuliffe, A O Neill.

Minor Footballers in East Final.

Castlelyons Minor Footballers are in the Rebel Óg East Cork D4 Football Final as they defeated St Catherines 1-9 to 2-9 in the semi-final. They now play Lisgoold in the final and it will be in Castlelyons on this Wednesday 28th August at 16.45. Our lads are a handy even side and so are Lisgoold. Best of luck lads enjoy the game.

Castlelyons play Sarsfields in the East Cork Under 21A Hurling Championship.

Our lads are out on Friday evening in the championship against a Sarsfields second outfit. Their premier team had a big win over Blackrock and used only one substitute, so their second team is very strong also as they have big numbers. They will have a lot of very strong minors. It will be an interesting game and hopefully all the O Leary’s will be available for us who together with Conor McCarthy, Leon Doocey and Shane Cotter have really improved this year. Colm Barry, Anthony Spillane and Eoin Maye are managing this team. Looking forward to a good game and best of luck lads.

Youghal 4-16 Castlelyons 3-15

Our premier outfit hit for sun-drenched Youghal on Sunday morning to take on the locals in Copper Alley at 11am. Arthur Murphy was on the whistle and did a good job. We were down a few regulars for various reasons but hurled very well at times. There were some very good scores from both sides. Ronan O Regan picked up a nasty injury and was replaced by Ciarán McGann. We were up 2-9 to 1-7 at half time with the goals coming from Ml Spillane and Dave Morrison.

Youghal who play Carrigaline next weekend in the championship seemed to have learned from their championship outing with us earlier in the year. They came out more determined in the second half, set up very well and tagged on 1-3 in a few minutes. Liam Moroney came on for Keith O Leary as he tightened up with an injury. However, we fought back but a late Lee Desmond goal gave them a 4-16 to 3-15 victory. Youghal will take more from this and although Carrigaline will be big favourites next weekend they will not die easy. It’s heavy going for our own management team as they strive for a strong fifteen. The physio has a tough job with the injury list and the clock is running as we wish them the best in pursuit of some fitness for the Inniscarra game.

Team: - J Barry, C O Neill, C Barry, B Carroll, D Tobin, S Moroney, D Varner, R O Regan, E Maye, T Carroll, R Fenton, K O Leary, B O Donovan, A Spillane and M Spillane. Subs: J P Murphy, P Roche, L Moroney, A O Neill and C McGann.

Congratulations to Lucy McNulty and the Cork U16 Camogie team.

Congratulations to Lucy McNulty and her Cork U16 teammates in defeating Galway last Sunday in the All-Ireland Final 2-10 to 1-14. Cork bridged a 16-year gap in winning it this year and in doing so stopped Galway’s bid for five in a row. Well done to all.

The famine continues for Cork at All Ireland Hurling level.

It was a case of so near and yet so far for Cork and our man Barry Murphy as Tipperary took the Bord Gais Energy All-Ireland Final last Saturday in The LIT Gaelic Grounds on a score 5-17 to 1-18. Right from the start Tipperary attacked the Ennis Road goals with some clinical hurling. I hear so much shouting about push up well this was push out as they came out the field, opened the Cork back and riddled the net four times in eight minutes. It killed the game as a spectacle in front of 16,500 patrons. Remember Cork were almost over the line in the Munster final only for a last-minute goal from Tipp.

So, what now. Well first a little reflection. There is serious pressure place on our young players by excessive expectations. The papers and social media carried massive reports all week portraying that there was even more than silverware at stake. These high expectations rarely lead to high-level performance and even gets to top professionals. Our Under 20 lads are playing what is after all an amateur game and must return to their parish, work or studies and daily chores this week. They got to the All-Ireland final and deserve our respect for it so well done to all.

They have worked hard in the Cork jersey for a while now at various age levels in the academy. There are a few more out there too as I saw a hardy fellow bang in 2-2 last Friday evening in an Intermediate Championship game and when I enquired, I was told he is still U20 for next year. So, let’s have a look outside the academy too. There is a saying that if you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got. Failure is success if we learn from it. Cork have won a lot in the past and our managers have always done their best. However, we now have new full-time high performance and strength and conditioning personnel working with Cork teams so as we enter the age of modernity the famine will end in time and the Rebels will be back.

Imokilly hurlers go for three in a row.

Champions of ’17 and ’18 Imokilly senior hurlers are going for three in a row. Having already beaten Carrigdhoun they now play last year’s finalists Midleton this coming Sunday evening 1.9.19 at 6pm in Carrigtwohill. Castlelyons are well represented with Colm Barry, Anthony Spillane, Barry Murphy and Tom Carroll on the panel. However, Colm Spillane, Castlelyons (injured), Niall O Leary, Castlelyons (now with UCC, Ciarán O Brien, St Ita’s (cruciate) and Paudie O Sullivan, Cloyne, (broken collar bone) are all out. Midleton are firing on all cylinders in training with a lot of their lads back from holidays and injury. Despite defeat earlier by Glen Rovers they bounced back a few weeks ago with a comprehensive victory over Ballymartle. It is so tough on the Divisional side trying to get a team together, but Fergal Condon is an astute manager and doing his best so hopefully we will see a good show from Imokilly on the night. This will be a rattling East cork derby and played in the heart of the Division so see you there.

Castlelyons GAA Draw.

Castlelyons are embarking on a major fundraising draw. We have many teams involved in the business end of the championships and there is a serious outlay in repairs and pitch maintenance to cater for an array of teams both boys and girls. The draw will comprise of five euro per ticket with first prize 500 euros, second 300 euros and third 200 euros so we are looking to all members of our committees and clubs giving a handout in sales. The general involvement in and social values of the local GAA Club are invaluable to the local community and we appreciate your support as always.
