Castlelyons play Inniscarra in the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship this Saturday

It’s a case of up the road to Riverstown this Saturday afternoon the 14^th September and a 3.30pm throw in this much awaited game. The réiteoir for the day is the competent Davy Farrell. An unusual set up for any team to say the least as we have waited six months for a second championship outing since we defeated Youghal last April. However, we are still there and it’s all or nothing on Saturday evening as Inniscarra are a very formidable side. They were defeated by Watergrasshill in the first round but have come storming into form since with two big wins over Ballinhassig and Mallow. However, we are in relatively good form for too we are in with a sporting chance. Best of luck to players and management. Please turn out and give an ould shout as the lads appreciate it. Castlelyons Camogie Girls in County Junior Final.

Don’t forget when the intermediate game is over in Riverstown to empty out fast and get on the road to the Camogie Grounds in Castle Road Cork for the SE Systems Junior B Camogie County Final as its Castlelyons v Ballinora. The girls defeated Cobh 2-11 to 3-5 in the semi-final and were well worth their win. However, Ballinora will be a different proposition as they are a very experienced outfit. We have a strong team with a blend of youth and experience. Áine O Brien is safe in goal with Niamh Barry sound at full back while Billy Shanahan and Clodagh O Flynn are motoring well in the middle of the field as Lucy McNulty and Gráinne McCarthy carry a threat in the forwards. We will need a big team effort if we are to carry the day, but Timmy McCarthy, Trevor Hickey and Mary McNulty have worked very hard on coaching this team and will have them in good order. Well done to Ciara Morrison.

In staying with Camogie, I see where Cork had a few teams in the U14 National Camogie Blitz in Dublin last weekend and all teams won their tournaments. Ciara Morrison was with winner with the U14 B team and of course all Cork teams led a massive parade before the big Camogie game on a memorable Camogie All Ireland Finals day in Croke Park on Sunday. Special congratulations to Ciara and well done to her parents, club and trainers.

Junior B Hurlers in East Cork Semi Final.

Castlelyons 1-15 Dungourney 2-6

We played Dungourney in Páirc De Bhride on Sunday in the quarter final of the East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship. The pitch was immaculate and the hurling lively. We were slow out of the traps as Dungourney ran up a 2-2 to 0-1 after 15 minutes. However, our backs settled down and R Feeney and B Carroll began to motor at midfield and got a good supply to the forwards. S Flynn (0-1) and N McAuliffe (1-0) won a lot of possession in the forwards as D Tobin slotted over some great frees (0-5) for us. We were in a reasonable place at 1-6 to 2-5 at half time.

Dungourney started well again in the second half but our backs held out. Our half back line got on top and the supply was good as Darren Tobin was to the fore again with 0-2 but then an upset as Darren had to retire with injury. Nevertheless, the lads kept working as Brian Dunny O Donovan and Jamie O Leary who banged over 0-5 between them and we ran out 1-15 to 2-6 winners. Again, this was a great team effort as the lads showed great heart and spirit. This was typified by the fact that due to injury some of the them played out of position and turned in mighty hours like Conor McCarthy (outfield) and Jamie O Leary (forwards). Mark Murphy of Bride Rovers was the referee and done a very good job with a full team of officials. Youghal and Bride Rovers are on the other side and the lads play the winners in the semi-final and its Aghada v Killeagh in the other semifinal.

Results of Weekly Lotto Draw. 

Our weekly club lotto draw was held in the Peddlers on Monday 9th September and the numbers drawn were 1, 2, 14 and 30. There was no winner. There were eight Lucky Dip winners were as follows: Eily Shanahan, Roseanne Tobin, Colman Flynn, Grace Lawlor, Michael O Donovan, Toddy Hallihan, Oisin Hegarty and Eilish O Brien.

Next week’s draw will be held on Monday 16th September at 9.30pm in the Peddlers. The Jackpot is still a massive €20,000 so don’t forget your ticket for next week. UCC bow out of senior hurling championship.

 Bishopstown 0-17 UCC 1-12.

Fitzgibbon Cup holders UCC with a weakened team in the Cork SHC for various reasons bowed out tamely to Bishopstown as Pa Cronin former Cork star struck 0-8 for the city club. This was particularly tough for our own clubmen Jack Barry and Niall O Leary who done well for UCC. Of course, Niall is a serious loss to Imokilly as he was anchor man on the D at centre half back for the last two years as the Divisional side try for three in a row this year.

Imokilly hurlers prepare for Cork SHC quarter final.

A weakened Imokilly side played De le Salle of Waterford in Ballynoe on Monday evening in preparation for the quarter final versus Sarsfields. This game is now fixed for Saturday 21.9.19 at 6.45pm. Newtownshandrum and the Glen open the gates for a 5pm start. Incidentally these games will be broadcast live on RTE Two. The head of RTE Sport intimated this will be bringing national moments to a national audience so let’s up the game lives up to expectations. We have four men on the panel presently in Colm Barry, Anthony Spillane, Tom Carroll and Barry Murphy so let’s hope they feature. More later.

Cracking East Cork Junior Hurling Final in Lisgoold in last Sunday evening.

The East Cork Junior Hurling final between Carrignabhfear and Russell Rovers certainly lived up to its billing last Sunday evening. The lead up and atmosphere was hectic as our own Castlelyons Pipers led out the warriors and Art Supple raised the tempo with his rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann. The standard of hurling was outstanding with little between the teams over the hour until Russell Rovers broke the deadlock with a cracking goal three minutes into injury time to take the title for the second year. It could well be that these two sides could yet meet in a county final. Congratulations to the host club Lisgoold who had the pitch, traffic arrangements, stewarding and refreshments in such great order and a céad míle fáilte for all. Also, the referee Jim Hennessey, Dungourney and his crew had an excellent game on a memorable evening.

Conor Counihan visits East Cork Board Meeting.

A local son of Imokilly visited the East Cork Board Divisional Meeting last Wednesday evening. Conor Counihan is now Project Co-Ordinator for Gaelic football in Cork. His primary role is the implementation of the five-year plan for football introduced earlier this year. While all boats are docked for 2019 the waters are pleasant as Cork are bathing in the success of the U20’s and U17’s. Two all-Ireland titles out of the big three is a massive start to the plan and Conor’s term is looking good. Conor’s mission at the East Cork meeting was really to listen and he got an earful of stuff from the mostly hurling barony but is a good listener and able to perform too. We wish him success in his new role.

Castlelyons GAA Draw.

Tickets are now on sale for this fundraising draw. We have many teams involved in the business end of the championships and there is a serious outlay in repairs and pitch maintenance to cater for an array of teams both boys and girls. The draw will comprise of five euro per ticket with first prize 500 euros, second 300 euros and third 200 euros so we are looking to all members of our committees and clubs giving a handout in sales. The general involvement in and social values of the local GAA Club are invaluable to the local community and we appreciate your support as always.
