Castlelyons GAA Weekly News WE 27.1.20 2020-02-05 21:00:00

Castlelyons GAA Weekly News week ended 27.1.20

Intermediate hurling challenge versus Bandon.

Our intermediate hurlers commenced had their first game of the year as they played Bandon in a challenge in the synthetic pitch in the Páirc last Friday evening.  They had a great turnout despite some unavailable and three lads involved with the county.  Thanks to John Kirby who refereed the game and did a good job.  Bandon managed by St Catherine’s Ian O Connell won on a score 2-20 to 2-15.

Team: JP Murphy, B Carroll, Liam Moroney, Conor McCarthy, C O Neill, T Carroll, S O Flynn, E Maye, P Roche, L Doocey, A Fenton, S Cotter, M Spillane, D Morrison, J Kearney. Subs: J Barry, R Fenton, D Morrison, Ml Geary, A O Regan, J Healy, C Cotter, D Tobin, B O Donovan, J O Leary, D Kenny.   All eleven subs got game time.  There is a strong panel there and with several regulars and others to come on it is imperative that we commence Junior B games and it would be mighty to get a manager for this team as there is great potential about.

Niall O Leary at wing back for Cork & Colm Spillane on subs.

Niall O Leary lined out in the back line for Cork in the first round of the national hurling league last Sunday.  They played Waterford in Walsh Park and despite 2-2 from an in-form Shane Kingston the Déise won the day by a single point in an exciting affair.  Colm Spillane was listed among the subs but not called into action.  They play Tipperary next Saturday evening at 7pm in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. While Ringy spoke about not judging the hurler until the cuckoo sings this game nestling on a new pitch should break more than eggshells.  There is a unique rivalry between Cork and Tipperary, both are looking for their first win, so it looks a cracker.  Get your tickets early, even €5 cheaper online, and don’t miss it.  Best of luck to our lads.

Club Project Development Meeting – Tonight 30.1.20 at 7.30pm in the Centre.

Please don’t forget this meeting. The Club is embarking on consultation and planning with a view to the provision of appropriate facilities for all our players, patrons, old and young, in the adult, camogie, juvenile clubs.  We are making a special appeal to all our members, non-members and anyone in the community to come along. While the meeting will be facilitated by independent person(s) it is your views that are important as it is your facility and a legacy for the parish community in years to come.

East Cork Championship Draws 2020.

Castlelyons teams are set down in the East Cork Championship Draws for 2020 as follows: -

Junior A Football: There are four groups of four Castlelyons are drawn in Groups One with Erins Own, Dungourney and Cloyne played off in a round robin and the top two teams in each group qualify for quarter finals.  We are just taking part in the championship so there is a little time left to work on a manager here, but it must be addressed asap.

Junior B Hurling: There are four groups of three and Castlelyons are drawn in group one with St Catherines and Youghal one to qualify for semi-finals.  It is imperative that our Executive secure a management outfit for this team as there are a lot of young and established players available and they must get games.  Games are the lifeline of the club, provides a supply to the intermediate team and keeps the state of hurling in a healthy position in the club so it wold be great if this area was addressed.

Under 21A Hurling: There are four groups and Castlelyons are drawn with Castlemartyr, Carrigtwohill and Youghal. Note two will qualify from this group for semi-finals because of lesser numbers in the other groups.

Under 21C Football: There are two groups of four and Castlelyons are drawn with Cloyne, Glanmire and Carrigtwohill with two to qualify for semi-finals. Thanks to Gerald McCarthy and Colm Barry, past and present players who have come on board to take charge of Under 21 football and hurling.  They are in action in the football this Saturday as they play Glanmire in the championship in Sallybrook timed presently for 4pm.  We don’t have a manager for the Junior B hurler or Junior A football to date.

Community Award – John Feeney

Best of luck to one of our great supporters John Feeney who is shortlisted for Community Volunteer of the Year 2020 in recognition of all his work in the Coolagown Community.  This is part of the prestigious All Ireland Community and Council Awards 2020.

The winners amongst several other category awards will be announced at a gala black-tie event hosted by RTE’s Marty Morrissey in the Hogan Suite Croke Park Stadium on Saturday 15th February 2020 and a limited number of tickets are still available.  You certainly deserve it John and the very best of luck to John from Castlelyons GAA.

Robbie Feeney transfers to Cormac McAnallens GAA Sydney for the summer.

Speaking of the Feeney family Robbie Feeney one of our star intermediate hurlers has taken some time out for travel and now taken up work in Sydney.  While there he has joined up with Cormac McAnallens GAA club and will play hurling with them.  No doubt he will enjoy the spirit and culture of Cuman Lúthchleas Gael in Aussie land and still have the touch when he returns.

Castlelyons Community Centre AGM.

The Committee are inviting all interested persons to attend this AGM and lend you support to the running of your Community Centre. This will be held on Wednesday 12th February at 8pm in the Club Bar.

Dr Tom Cavanagh inducted into the Hall of Fame.

We wish to congratulate Dr Tom Cavanagh who was recently inducted into the Cork Hall of Fame and is only the third Corkman to enter the Hall of Fame in the 27-year history of the awards scheme, others being Ted Crosbie and Fergal Keane OBE. One of the organisers, referred to him as ‘one of Ireland’s most successful and respected business figures’ and that despite his great success in business, said he has spent much of his life working for social responsibility and equality and over the years, working ‘in a quiet humble way, never looking for recognition, but has effected great change for his communities’. He has promoted the importance of education and his alma mater UCC have thanked him for his many decades of contribution. He established Irish Business Against Litter as he believes a litter free environment promotes both economic prosperity and that citizens have a right to live in a litter free environment.

In the 1980s he also established The Tomar Trust, which earned him the lifetime achievement in philanthropy award in recognition of his contribution to communities in Munster and the rest of Ireland. It provides support and resources to community groups.  We in Castlelyons are very thankful to Tom Cavanagh as he has shown belief in our vision and assisted us in the recent purchase of land for the club.
