Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 9.3.20. 2020-03-11 10:15:00

Under 21 footballers advance to semi-final.

Castlelyons 3-7 Cloyne 1-8

We were at home to Cloyne in the East Cork U21C championship on Thursday night.  It was winners take all with a semi-final spot at stake, so it was always going to be a tough one. There was a drizzle at times, but the pitch was in great order and we elected to play towards Bridesbridge with the aid of a slight breeze. Cloyne meant business and dominated in places early on as they went 0-4 up.  Then James Kearney had a great turn over and hit down field parting to Richard Morrison who dodged his way in for a delightful goal and the same player pointed a free shortly after. Cloyne fought their way back and had a goal to make it Cloyne 1-4 to Castlelyons 1-1 after 15 minutes.  Darragh Spillane got possession on the wing and crossed to Conor McCarthy who parted to Dave Morrison on the run and he banged in a second goal for us.  But Cloyne put two points on the board again to remain very much in the game.  Then pushing for half time Conor McCarthy had a point after good work by James Kearney and almost on the short whistle Peter Roche had a good goal for us after a flick on by Richard Morrison.  This left the score 3-2 to 0-6 at half time.

Starting the second half Darragh Spillane did well on the wing and passed to Dave Morrison but the Cloyne goalie brought off a great save.  They hit back at us and planted a massive goal and a point to leave it 3-3 to 1-7 with i5 mins left on the clock.  However, our half back line of P Varner L Doocey and S Cotter got on top and with Roche and Kearney in the middle the ball was going in.  Evan Lenehan won a ball parted to Dave Morrison who scored a point and Richard Morrison pointed another to put us back in command with Peter Roche putting over another from play.

Overall, the lads showed great heart in this one as any time your Cloyne you will earn your stripes.  We are now down to play Glenbower Rovers on Saturday 14th March with time and venue to be arranged.  St Catherines and Glanmire meet in the other semi final on the same day. Thanks to Colm Barry, Gerald McCarthy and John Lenehan who are over the team and putting good shape to their play.

Team: John Paul Murphy, Eoin O Neill, Shane Flynn, Declan Morrison, Pierse Varner, Leon Doocey, Shane Cotter, Peter Roche (1-1), James Kearney, Colm McCarthy, David Morrison (1-1), Evan Lenihan, Darragh Spillane, Conor McCarthy (0-1), Richard Morrison (1-2). Subs Gavin O Neill, Ian Ryan, Declan Geary, Peter Greaney (all got game time and played their part)

Hard earned draw in Ballinspittle.

Courcey Rovers 1-16 Castlelyons 0-19

We were away to Courcey Rovers in this third round Division 2 league game on Sunday.  Travelling along the 43-mile journey and passing by the city one could not but wonder at the enormity of the county.  With 259 clubs, good facilities and almost all involved in both hurling and football Cork must pick up a few more All Irelands soon and get that Páirc paid off in a short time.  When we hit the village, the heavens opened, and I thought we would have another apparition.  However, it cleared for the game and the pitch was in reasonable condition.  Courcey’s settled better fetching and spraying the ball about with ease as the went 1-8 to 0-4 up after twenty minutes. Michael Spillane had 0-4 for us.  Mike Spillane had 0-1 more from a free. A hard-working Barry Murphy was unlucky with two far out shots and we were beginning to settle. However, Courcey’s had two more points before Alan Fenton closed out the half with a monster of a point from out the wing before half time to leave Courcey Rovers leading 1-10 to 0-6 at the short whistle.  We were lucky in a sense that our full back line of Jamie O Leary, Colm Spillane and Cian O Leary were in such good form as they dealt well with a lively Courcey unit. Colm O Neill was in good form too and Shane Moroney did well on their county star Sean Twomey.  The retirement of Tom Carroll through injury shortly after throw in affected us somewhat as Tom was going well this year and hopefully, he will be back shortly.

We started the second half playing into the Garretstown goals and the aid of what breeze was there.  Our lads came to life as they let in the ball faster to our forwards and none better that Anto Spillane and Dave Morrison to move and take their chances as Anto put over 0-4 from play and Dave 0-2 from play.  The lads were now playing cracking hurling all over the field as Barry Murphy and Eoin Maye worked so hard around the middle. But Courcey's were not lying down as they kept the scoreboard ticking over.  Mike Spillane was extremely sharp as he managed 0-6 in the second half with two of them from play.  In fact, Mike Spillane scored a 65 to level the game and between gamesmanship on the part of Courcey’s and an unusual decision by the referee, Sean O Mahony, Mike had to take the 65 a second time.  Mike held his cool and over she flew again for the equalizer on the final whistle to leave it 0-19 to 1-16.  Our second half display was top class and we deserved the draw.

Overall a much better performance this week as Colm Spillane and Niall O Leary added a new dimension.  We have injuries to Leo Sexton, Tom Carroll and Colm Barry and while they will be back it gives a chance to others to put up their hand for a place in the starting 15 for the championship.  Jamie O Leary after a year out is back in a big way. Cian O Leary was tied a bit through study last year is showing great form and Ronan Fenton is back after lengthy injury.  There is six weeks left to the championship and good bit of work to be done but no doubt we will see further improvement. In general the referee, Stephen Murphy, had a good game too considering the conditions.

Team: Jack Barry, Jamie O’Leary, Colm Spillane, Cian O’Leary, Shane Moroney, Colm O’Neill, Tom Carroll, Eoin Maye, Niall O’Leary, Leon Doocey, Alan Fenton (0-1), Ronan Fenton, Mike Spillane (0-12), Anthony Spillane (0-4), Barry Murphy. Subs: Brian Carroll, David Morrison (0-2), Leo Sexton, Darren Tobin, Brian Donovan, Ronan O’Regan Shane Flynn, John Healy, James Kearney, Conor McCarthy, Liam Moroney, Cian O’Flynn.

County Board Meeting.

At the last County Board meeting the Youghal delegate, Liam O Laochdha, who had missed the previous meeting, expressed disappointment that the County Board pass was being replaced, while the St. Nick’s delegate felt that All-Ireland medal holders should be excluded from the change, but the Cathaoirleach reiterated that the proposal had been accepted unanimously at the previous meeting, that it was a very small gesture by which we could all do our bit to improve the finances of Cork GAA, given that there were over 900 free passes in circulation, and that it was vital that all pass-holders were treated equally by being offered the opportunity to purchase the new Season Ticket at a much-discounted rate of €50 instead of the pass.

The Cathaoirleach, Tracey Kennedy, then advised the meeting that talks had begun involving Cork GAA, Cairde Chorcaí, members of the stadium board and members of the financial advisory and planning sub-committee with a view to developing a co-ordinated plan for the financing of all aspects of Cork GAA, including the stadium, and that an update would be provided to the County Board in due course.

While the pay back of circa €30 million is a tall order Cork continue to make great efforts and the chairperson announced that financial advisers BDO Eaton Square had been engaged to develop a joint business plan Cork GAA and Páirc Uí Chaoimh, which was due for completion by early summer. As the secondment of Michelle McAleer to the stadium was due to end after the completion of the stadium accounts, Cork GAA and the stadium board were to jointly fund three short-term appointments in the commercial, facilities and accounting areas, to operate across both entities pending the finalisation of the business plan.

Cork GAA 1920 Commemoration Jersey.

This 2020 CLCG Chorcaí are observing the centenary of a landmark year in the Rebel County. They have arranged through O’Neill’s to produce, wear and sell a Cork GAA 1920 Commemoration Jersey.  These jerseys were launched recently.  They are are black with red trimmings and showcase the portraits and signatures of heroes Tomás Mac Curtain and Terence MacSwiney, both of whom died in 1920 while serving as Lord Mayor of Cork. Also depicted is the Burning of Cork and the monument commemorating the Kilmichael Ambush on the back, all of which took place 100 years ago. The Jersey was worn by the Cork Hurlers against Limerick and by the Footballers against Derry and is certainly a collector’s item at €70.

Works to club rooms, toilets and squash court area.

As outlined before in these notes our club previously has and is currently registered under the Registration of Clubs Act 1904 – 2000.  The Fire Officer inspected the place earlier this year before the court granted the renewal of the registration and identified some safety concerns.  The bar, toilets, squash court and viewing area as well as the tuck shop require refurbishment. The Fire Officer accepted a blended approach of remedial works from the GAA as the works comprise fitting fire doors and some minor alterations and electrical works.  So hopefully all stakeholders involved will commence the work as these facilities are required for all clubs.
