Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 14.9.20. 2020-09-17 10:12:00

County Premier Intermediate Semi Final on Saturday 19.9.20 in Páirc Uí Rinn at 3.30pm.

Castlelyons by virtue of wins over Blackrock, Blarney and Inniscarra in their section of the championship are in the semi-final versus Courcey Rovers.  We have been about for a few years threatening to do the business without but getting out of the blocks.  They are an exceptional bunch of lads as they bought their own gear, increased the membership to the club this year, did not shy back from a bit of work on the Grounds, and deserve success, but people don’t always get what they deserve in this world.  However, this year the players have made a serious effort as even through lockdown they trained individually and met through Zoom for physical sessions. When allowed train there was a mighty effort too.  This showed in the championship with a good win over Blackrock, outstanding Against Blarney and reasonable against Inniscarra.

Now, the next game is the semi-final against the men from under the statue Courcey Rovers.  Courcey’s are a remarkable consistent outfit and despite defeat in the final of 2018 are back again making their run like a good horse coming up the hill in the Galway Plate.  They were beaten by Carrigaline and Youghal then had a 0-15 win over a fancied Aghada outfit and yet again a 0-6 win over a fancied Watergrasshill team in the quarter final.  They are strong from the goalie Stephen Nyhan to the corner forward Tadgh O Sullivan and in real form.  We are in good form too but must produce a fierce hour’s hurling as this is championship stuff and if we do, we will be in with a right shout.  Best of luck to the team and management.  Castlelyons Abu.

Castlelyons Juniors into East Cork Semi Final.

Castlelyons 2-18 Aghada 1-12.

Our junior hurlers made the short trip to Dungourney to take on Aghada in the Quarter final of the East Cork Oil Sponsored Junior B Hurling championship. Jim Daly the Youghal man was referee for the night and our lads played against a slight breeze in the first half. Aghada made full use of what wind was there as they as they led us 0-8 to 0-3 at the water break which was just on 19 mins.  Our points came from Brian O Donovan, Ciarán McGann and Darren Tobin.  We settled better after the break John Healy, Colm McCarthy and Shane Flynn took a bit of control in the half back line. We put over five points for the last ten minutes of the first half and were paying well but Aghada scored 1-2 t leave it 1-10 to 0-8 to Aghada at half time.

Alan O Regan came on at half time and added real value to the forwards. Darren Tobin had four points between play and frees, Alan O Regan two points, Cian O Flynn two points and Ciarán McGann a point as we reached the water break while Aghada had only 0-1 scored.  We resumed play with Alan O Regan on target again.  Then came the gamechanger as Ciarán McGann went for goal but was hauled down and Darren Tobin put away the resultant penalty.  Cian O Flynn added another point and Ronan Fenton had a goal to give Castlelyons a solid win of 2-18 to 1-12.

Overall, this was a good display as our backs settled down after an early threat.  Brian O Donovan and Cian O Flynn especially were flying at midfield.  The forwards worked hard and took their chances well.  We now await the winners of Midleton and Killeagh in the semi-final which will be a tough one.  This game will not be on for two games at least so lads have a chance to recover from knocks and sharpen up their game a bit more.  Great to see Roche back again after a nasty leg injury and a little more time and he will be flying again.

Panel. v Killeagh: E Barry, D Morrison, L Moroney, C Lawlor, J Healy, C McCarthy, S Fenton, S O’Flynn C O’Flynn, C McGann R Bransfield, D Tobin, R Fenton, Ml J Dorgan, Peter Roche,  A O’Regan, S Cotter, P Roche, R Morrison, S Casey, B O’Donovan and G O’Neill

Our Under 16 put on a brave show in Rebel Óg Mid Cork League Final.

Mayfield 4-12 Mayfield 3-9

Our U16 hurlers travelled to Mayfield last Saturday for the Rebel Og Mid Cork League Final. Having lost to Mayfield in the earlier rounds of the competition, Castlelyons came in as underdogs, but the attitude in training in the lead up was positive. In the first half the boys made little of the underdog tag and making use of the wind picked off 0-3.  Then a great cross field ball from Leon Shanahan found Olan Lenehan who finished to the net. Mayfield upped their game tagging on two points again.  However, our defence held firm and Aaron Fenton while active in goal made two fine saves. Cess Kouwenberg and Brian Spillane now go on top at midfield. We pushed on again and another great move was finished clinically by Patrick Dooley to the net. For the last 10 minutes of the first half Castlelyons completely dominated but the Mayfield keeper, was outstanding and brought off some massive saves. Both sides exchanged points to leave it 2-6 to 0-3 at halftime in Castlelyons favour.

The breeze got somewhat stronger in the second half and with wind at their backs Mayfield hit us for a goal straight after the break and started to gain momentum.  They had another goal coming up to the second half water break. Our team began to tire as many of the lads are underage next year and under fourteen also. Mayfield began to dominate, and we had fallen five points behind. Castlelyons never gave up and when Patrick Dooley pulled on a ground ball for his second goal of the game it was back to a two-point game. Unfortunately, Mayfield responded straight away with a goal of their own followed by a quick point. Under pressure in defence it was now our goalkeeper Aaron Fenton who pulled off some massive saves to keep us in the game. Cess now operating at full forward added a huge point from out on the sideline to keep us close, but it wasn't enough as Mayfield ran out six-point winners in the end. Great credit to this young team and hopefully the experience will stand to them as many are under U16 again next year. Well done lads and also to their management team of Donal O Callaghan, Pat O Sullivan and Freek Rosner.

Congratulations to Lisgoold

Congratulations to our neighbouring club Lisgoold who won their first ever East Cork JHC and brought home the Jamsie Kelleher Cup to a few parties Sunday night.  They always had the upper hand on Carrignabhfear but found it difficult to put them away as they made a right game of it.  Ciarán Cronin, John Cronin, Liam O Shea, and John Cashman really done well for Lisgoold in a team of heroes.
