Castlelyons win East Cork JBHC in 1976.

Castlelyons had a strong football team in the seventies winning the East Cork Junior B in 1974 but they kept the hurling going as well. They played the JBHC Final in Riverstown in 1976 and defeated Erins Own Erins Own 2.15 to 2.5. This was an important hurling win at the time as the juvenile club was formed the same year and there was a great interest in the hurling at the time which yielded dividends afterwards.  The Castlelyons team was as follows; Seanie Barry, Bertie Clancy (RIP), Jim Kirwin, Dermot McAuliffe, John Murphy (RIP), Donal McCarthy (Capt.), Maurice Carroll, Raymond Murray, Maurice O'Connell, Michael Lyons, Matt Hegarty, Paddy O Leary, Dick O Brien, Ned Fitzgerald and Pat Crowley.

Congratulations to Daniel Lane, Bride Rovers on taking up Secretary of East Cork Board.

At the East Cork Board February meeting Daniel Lane, Fanaithe na Bríde was ratified as new secretary of the East Cork Board replacing Michael O Brien, Athfhada, who had completed his five-year term. This is an exciting appointment as Daniel Lane is lending youth and experience to the Board. He has given mighty service to his club the Rover to date both as player and administrator. He is currently secretary of his own club.  He has gaeldom, administration and games in his genes as his dad Gerard Lane served in various administration positions of our Board before moving on to the County Board and eventually becoming Chairman back in 2014. Ger currently represents Cork on the Munster Council. Congratulations to Daniel, his family and his Club Fanaithe na Bríde and wishing him the best from our Club.

Commencement of playing season postponed.

There are new variants of COVID about and the numbers of daily infections are still stubborn although on the way down after a terrible January of hospitalisation and death. We wish to extend sincere sympathies to the families of those who lost loved ones due to the pandemic. The GAA’s COVID Advisory Group recently termed any return to training soon as “irresponsible”. There are national writers even former players calling for more leadership from the Cumann Lúthchleas Gael and to lobby the government on an earlier return. Well surely, we must wait until the rate of infection reduces a lot more, our schools must be allowed open, industry like the building trade reopen and travel beyond the 5K increased.

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael were outstanding in 2020 and played its part from day one with top level scenario planning. There will be continuous liaison with the Government and the best possible arrangements will be made for the remainder of 2021. The uncertainty of the pandemic makes it so difficult to come up with the right decisions but if any decision is wrong high level of infection could reoccur and the aftermath will be flooded with severe criticism. Government and GAA leaders and those in other sports are playing in the most dangerous of games and we appreciate their great effort. A return to games and training will assist in the mental and physical health of our young people and we look forward to that return in a safe and timely manner. In the words of the great man Seamus Heaney “if we winter this one out, we can summer anywhere” so let us look forward to better times ahead.

Votes of Sympathy.

Castlelyons GAA wish to extend sincere sympathy to the Houlihan family of Redemption Road, Cork City and formerly Castlelyons and to the Karuga family Castlelyons and Kenya on their recent bereavements. Ar dheis Dé go raibh siad.
