Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 26.4.21. 2021-04-28 20:31:00

Rebels’ Bounty Support Draw this Thursday 29.4.21.

The next Rebels’ Bounty draw will take place on April 29th. In total almost €40,000 in prize money will be given out across thirty winners with a bumper top prize of €25,000.  In association with Cork GAA media partners, the Irish Examiner will livestream the full event from the TV Studio with Colm O'Connor the presenter at 7pm.  All details and the link for the draw are on the cork GAA Website so check it out.

Of course, the last time we had three draws in one and our own star Colm Spillane helped in drawing the sliotars. We had two winners the last night and who knows we could have a big winner this time out. So be ready for an exciting evening.   Also live on the show, we will see the cork county hurling and football championship Draws for 2021.  Castlelyons are in the PIHC draw on the night so we will know our opponents and the set up for 2021.  Incidentally in reply to many queries all Rebels Bounty ticket sales for the 2021 draw are now closed and 2022 draw will open in winter 2021.

Return to play and COVID-19 Protocols.

Our underage returned to the training last evening and all went well.  The main pitch is booked up for 18 training hours during the week and Leahy’s field for 12 hours as COVID Supervisor and field coordinator Helen Hussey is busy. We are asking that all follow the Return to Play protocols strictly and ensure all are registered on the Return to Play online at returntoplay.gaa.ie on the GAA website.

Should a parent/guardian wish to stay and watch their child at training, we ask strict social distancing and public health guidelines be always adhered to. It is important that parents do not congregate in groups before, during or after sessions, outside of what is permitted in current Government regulations.  Remember the basics, maintain your Social Distance, wear a clean face covering when distancing can’t be achieved, wash your hands regularly and reduce your social contacts where possible to an absolute minimum.  The pandemic is not gone away, and we must remain on high alert as we have seen schools, in Cork, Tipperary, Dublin and other places closed on a temporary basis. On a positive note, the future is looking good but please drive on with the vaccine and might get a good summer too.  Stay safe.

Letter from Uachtarán Larry McCarthy to all Clubs.

President of the GAA Larry McCarthy has written to all Clubs and explained how the opportunity to play was limited by factors outside of the Association’s control. But what we can control over the next number of months as we return to training and playing games is the quality of the experience that we can provide our players.

He strongly encouraged all clubs, coaches, games development officers and those responsible for planning and organising fixtures to ensure everyone benefits from a multitude of playing opportunities. He wants as many games opportunities as possible, including leagues, blitzes, and creative festival-type competitions, over a longer season. He says we should consider allowing more substitutions, or even unlimited, and provide alternative formats to provide a playing environment that creates the best possible experience for all our young players.

He asks those with a responsibility for nurturing the development of our next generation of players should be mindful of the fact that the benefit of lifelong participation in Gaelic games is not something to be measured in terms of cups or medals or competitions won. He feels strongly that the GAA is about people, friendships, positive experience and feeling a valued part of something that belongs to all of us.

In the USA, the performance of a President during their first 100 days in office are vitally important. The public form their views about leadership, priorities, values, and style. During this time, they have an unrivalled opportunity to move, direct and energise people, to call a halt to past practices and to move on confidently in a new or modified direction. Larry McCarthy being the first overseas President as he has resided in the USA is quietly putting his own stamp on the job here too.  He places an unrivalled emphasis on the Club and wants members to have enjoyable lifelong participation in our games.  He has appointed numerous females to his Committees including the most senior officials of Ladies football and Camogie. Tosach maith leath na hoibre.

Lady Jane a big hit in Castlelyons.

Well, the story was out on Monday as a group welcomed us to the Lady Jane Facebook. This writer went in search of the page and found Lady Jane pages on clothing, haircuts, body and beauty, food in Japan and a fabulous page on Sweet Lady Jane in California doing special coffee and doughnuts. But sure, took it up wrong as the Community Centre page, back on track after a while was full of life promoting Lady Jane in Castlelyons and it certainly lived up to all expectations.

Pride of place went to “Lady Jane” outside the Centre on Saturday as they served top class coffee, cakes, crepes, and other sweeties to were served to our community who queued for the delicious treats. The little village was buzzing with a summer feel and festive scene. Congratulations and well done to Colm and Deirdre Barry and the best of luck to them on this entrepreneurial venture. No doubt it will add life to the village.  Of course, Fr Ferris Park was all action too with plenty walkers and the playground in demand.  What a valuable amenity coming of age now. Then down the road we had the well-stocked Glanbia Co-Op Garden Centre Co-Op was doing a roaring trade as Eileen Palmer and Dave Barry epitomised what customer service is all about. They are all adding colour, variety and helping us feel so good and sweet again after a winter of misery.

Coffee Beo in Father Ferris Park.

Coffee connoisseurs will have an opportunity to avail of the various types of coffee, special chocs cookies and cakes in Fr Ferris Park shortly. Castlelyons man Niall O’Leary will be setting up Coffee Beo and starting on the May Day the Bank Holiday Saturday. This is a first venture in the entrepreneurial scene for UCC student Niall, a busy man too as he is currently going well with the Cork hurlers, and, of course, Castlelyons.  The Park was well populated last Saturday with the beautiful walkway and the children’s playground on demand as the scene intermingles with historic Kiln, beautiful Kent monument, a memory to Fr Ferris and some nice seating. Coffee Beo could well add to the existing treasures of the Park and we wish Niall the best of luck with his new venture.

 Dog fouling on the Pitches.

Please understand that dogs are not allowed onto the grounds, for reasons of health and safety of all users. It has been brought to notice by a young trainer that there are animal faeces on the pitches, and this is not good enough.

Some additions to the Steering Group.

The Steering Committee drawn from the adult, camogie and juvenile clubs and ratified by these clubs is busy arranging the various phases for development.  Our chairperson Mr. Gerry Healy has stood down due to work. Gerry was involved in the purchase of the land and setting up the steering group.  He has given an outstanding commitment but as a State Solicitor he is a busy man and while he stepped aside as Chairperson he will assist in the background. Our club treasurer Mick Spillane now takes over as Chairperson of the group.  Great to see some youthful additions and all are needed. Declan and Leo Sexton who have come on to the Group as has Kieran Barrett the new Chairperson of the Juvenile Club. The meetings continue and full reports should be given to each of the clubs, adult, juvenile and camogie at their monthly meetings.

Votes of Sympathy.

Castlelyons GAA wish to extend sincere sympathy to the Milword family, and the O’Keeffe family Rathcormac in their recent bereavement. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sí.

Club Main Sponsor: ZEUS Packaging Group.
