Spinathon & Funathon Castlelyons 2021

Castlelyons GAA Club, including the Juvenile and Camogie clubs plus the Community Centre Committee are continuing to organise a big Spinathon on the first weekend of 7, 8 and 9th of August.  The Committee are looking for as many as possible to spin and that includes you. Whatever your level of fitness or your cycling ability is at come on have a go take a sponsorship card, donate a few euro and spin. It’s not a race, whatever pace you choose is fine. We have set the ambitious challenge of 48 hours of continuous spinning, 3 bikes, 144 people, and thousands of miles. It’s not a race, you can choose your own pace. No need to worry about a bike as stationary bikes kindly donated for the Spinathon by Max Fitness & Sports Therapy Rathcormac will be available.  Of course, if you have your own bike and a turbo you are more than welcome to bring that along on the day.

Once you have collected a card the Committee will be in touch to organise your time slot with you. All returned sponsorship cards will be included in a prize draw. The slogan is keeping the wheels spinning for your Club and Community Centre.  Our organising committee Michael Barrett, Pamela McCarthy John McCarthy, Michelle Fenton Kieran Barrett, John Coleman and Helen Hussey are also arranging a Funathon for all the under 16’s and are awaiting some details from team managers.  More details next week.

Castlelyons Intermediate Hurlers qualify for League Cup Semi Final.

Castlelyons have qualified for the semi final of the Red FM League Cup semi-final versus as they defeated Mayfield, drew with Carrigaline, and lost to Fermoy by just a point.  Watergrasshill have come through their group as winners.  They are motoring well, with Daire O’Leary and Shane O’Regan fresh from All Ireland U20 success and home advantage they will be clear favourites.  Should be a good game so don’t forget the venue Watergrasshill at 3pm on Sunday 25.7.21.

Castlelyons Junior footballers suffer comprehensive defeat.

Carrigtwohill 0-17 Castlelyons 0-4

Castlelyons played Carrigtwohill in Lisgoold last Saturday evening but found the going tough all through.  We have a strong number that have elected for hurling only and a few injured.  Now while I am not saying we would win the game with the lads unavailable, at least we would have some choice and subs on a tough evening.  In the first half while we defended well, and our goalie Stephen Hickey made a great save we were well in the game.  We were victim of some poor decisions by the referee when we were doing well in that first half which ended 0-3 to 0-8.  However, in the second half Carrig put on a fine display of football shooting some great scores and even though it is a round robin we will find the going tough now. 

The players that turned out must be commended for giving their best on the evening and indeed make a great effort for football in the club and to the mentors.  November was a long time ago since a Zoom AGM when we had loads of members and players agreeing on a right cut off football this year, but the hot balmy days of summer are different reality.  Castlelyons seem to be more of a hurling Club these times.  It is important to note that we have a strong crop of players doubling in hurling with Niall O Leary and Colm Spillane with Cork, eleven of our intermediate hurling team training with Imokilly and I think we had two doing a bit with the county Under 20’s and don’t forget we have some injuries presently to our players.  This is a lot of hurling work for our club members training and playing with other teams and then expect top hurling and football for Castlelyons. Even some of our underage teams are conceding in football which is a pity.  Perhaps this should be looked at for the 2022 season and decide as to what direction the Clubs wishes to take.  Would dropping to Junior B a solution but games still must be played.  Sure, it’s another chat for a winter’s night.

Its Cork versus Clare on Saturday at the LIT Gaelic Grounds.

The Rebels are on the road again and this time they take on the Banner.  Cork had a close encounter with Limerick, and we see what Kyle Hayes and his mates did to Tipperary in the second half last Sunday.  What would the old stagers of the Hell’s Kitchen era of John Doyle, Mick Maher and Kieran Carey think when they saw a forward swanning through their defence and bag the ball in the net even holding the hurley upside down.  How times have changed but it was a cracker of a goal. Cork have developed this fast passing and moving game to great effect and our own Niall O Leary raced as good as any Kyle Hayes through the field from corner back to set up a great Cork goal against Limerick.  This shows Cork side have the potential of Limerick.  Clare come from honest endeavour but a lesser position as they had a four-point victory over Waterford but a four-point loss to Tipperary in the semi-final.  If Cork get the run on a team, they could destroy them as their new style cannot be dismissed lightly and no doubt Brian Lohan and crew will try to plan and cope with that style.  Sure, even Davy might help, and this should make Saturdays game should be a good one.  Will it be Rebels Abú.

Cúl Eile Summer Camp will be held in Castlelyons.

Well Folks, Cúl Eile, a pilot camp organised for children with / special additional needs, will be held by Castlelyons GAA next week for three days from 27^th to 29^th July inclusive.  The cost is €30, and this is only to cover the Gear.  As with the typical Cúl Camp, activities include football, hurling, and other fun time-outs.  Cúl Eile is relatively new.  It was held in Wexford, Clonakilty and Midleton in 2020.  In those camps they saw children who hadn't previously enjoyed sport flourish, learning one or more strengths, and above all had lots of fun and laughter.

Simon Barry of the juvenile club is putting in huge work in the arrangements and they are going very well.  Thanks to two or three who have responded, and the assistance is very much appreciated, and it would be great to get a few more club members to facilitate the Camp. So, a special appeal again for your help and if you could contact 0834864577 this week it would be appreciated and rewarding.  There is a little basic training required but only takes minimum online time.  Thanks to Sean Crowley, who covers Cork City and East as Games Development Officer, for his guidance, advice, and support and to Kevin O’Callaghan Cork GAA Games Manager who granted the Camp. 

Minor Footballers defeated.

Last Wednesday our U18 Footballers started their football league with an away trip to Ballyhooly to take on Ballycastle (Castletownroche and Ballyhooly joined).  Our lads put in a great effort all through. After an evenly contested first half, Ballycastle got a couple of goals in the second which helped them to the points on the night.

Ensure special precautions due COVID and the Delta Variant.

Covid and the Delta variant is strong in communities and can cause havoc as it is more transmissible, can cause severe illness and at times vaccines don’t work well against it. Recently there were serious disruptions in sports to Mayo footballers and especially to the Dublin Hurlers who had to line out against Kilkenny without four of the panel.  It has even affected a Club in East Cork. It is unfortunate that players can become unavailable in both club and county teams so great care and application of all possible prevention is necessary.

Please take these precautions, physical distancing, wearing a mask, keeping rooms well ventilated, avoiding crowds, cleaning your hands, and coughing into a bent elbow or tissue. Check all local advice where you live and work. Do it all!  Stay safe as the country strives to deal with the current scene and endeavours to provide vaccination of the entire population. Please, avoid the 3Cs: - Closed spaces, Crowded Spaces, Close contact.

Castlelyons girls in the medals.

Congratulations to Lucy McNulty, Ava and Lia Hallihan who were on the Cork minor camogie panel that had a comprehensive victory over Limerick in the Munster Final at Castle Road last week.  Both Ava and Lucy played in the second half and done well.  Incidentally, they played Waterford in the semi-final, and Lia was given game time. 

Congratulations to Martin Dorgan.

Congratulations to our esteemed Club Vice President Martin Dorgan who was recently presented with Honorary Life Membership by the Irish Farmers Association for his support and dedication of the years.  Martin is mighty for us too as he is a weekly assistant with the running of the Club Lotto since its inception and helps with the field.  Well done, Martin.

Votes of Sympathy.

Castlelyons GAA wish to extend sincere sympathies to Ms Josephine Randles and family, Colm, Peter, Susan (Kelleher), Stephen & Niall and the extended family on the sad passing of Stephen Randles.  The Randles family lived in Castlelyons for many years before moving to Rosscarbery.  Stephen came to the village as a young creamery manager in the 1960’s and took up as manager of Castlelyons Co-op in 1971 until his retirement in 1996.  He was very generous with his time to the community and probably the highlight being Chair of the Finance Committee on the building of the Community Centre in 1971.  He was from Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry and played with Castlelyons winning East Cork medals in both hurling and football. Stephen was a great contributor to our Club and assisted in various projects. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
