Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 16.8.21. 2021-08-19 14:32:00

Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 9.8.21.

The Flags are flowing down Grand Avenue and all about for Sunday’s All Ireland Final.

As one hits down the Grand Avenue towards Stables Cross where the National School is located the place, is decorated to the last in the colours of the blood and bandage.  Indeed, all the parish is well decorated in the colours.  Castlelyons and Kilmagner schools have had great teachers down the years and the motto as Gaeilge is ar scath a chéile a mhairimid.  The emphasis is on the positive and they are a massive help to our games and as a rural parish we punch above our weight.  We have produced many all-Ireland medal winners at underage level.  We had two players in the set up back in 2005 when Cork won their last All Ireland senior hurling championship with the legendary Timmy McCarthy at wing forward and Ciarán McGann on the panel as well.  They were defeated the following year by Kilkenny.  Timmy played in four All Irelands winning three medals plus a bag of underage medals.  Now, sixteen years later we have Niall O Leary starring on the Cork team all year and Colm Spillane fighting for a place too. Both lads are a credit to their families, their club, and an inspiration to all our juveniles too.

So on to Sunday and its game on again with two Castlelyons lads involved with the Rebels as they take on raging favourites Limerick in the final.  Limerick are two to seven with the bookies because of their a great 2020 and showing no let-up in their form this year.  However, looking at Corks performances so far this year the improvement has been gradual but most impressive.  Kieran Kingston and his selectors trawled the county for hurlers and found a fair few good ones including bring in the deep-thinking Donal O’Grady to his backroom team.  Cork are now tight at the back, very strong in the middle third and have a facility to score goals as they have hardy speed merchants in the forwards.  Of course, Limerick are going to ask serious questions as we seen the Déise hit them so hard early in the semi-final only to run out of steam as the boys in green took the hits and powered on for victory.

The victory over Kilkenny in extra time will stand to Cork and while it was emotional it is a realisation that they can do the business.  Limerick will be wary as a Cork team in a final are a different animal and heading for thirty-one titles. I remember my late father always said you’d want to be twice as good to beat Cork in a final. Hopefully, that will be the way on Sunday. Best of luck to the Cork team and mentors and most especially Niall and Colm.

Tickets frenzy for Final.

There is a ticket frenzy in Castlelyons ahead of next Sunday’s All Ireland hurling final at Croke Park.  Castlelyons received 34 tickets while there were almost 80 applicants for tickets.  However, while many of the workers and big supporters were lucky in the draw some were not so lucky, and the search continues.  There will be no public sale of tickets either. The attendance for Sunday is down to half due to Covid and capped at 40,000.  Corporate boxes and Premium level account for 7,000.  So, the divide is 50-50 to Limerick and Cork plus an allocation to every county in Ireland and varying demands at national GAA level.  Before tickets reach clubs Cork County Board also have a list of responsibilities that must be met with sponsors, players, backroom staff, and many others.  Stand tickets are €90 while Dineen and Hill 16 are €60.

Castlelyons GAA Extraordinary General Meeting Saturday 28.8.21 at 5.30pm

Since the purchase of extra lands Castlelyons have worked hard at researching funding including capital sports grants, viewing other club layouts, doing all the preparatory work on planning permission which is now well advanced. The Steering Group have prepared a Development Plan with some options.  It was decided at the last monthly meeting to hold a Special General Meeting on Saturday August 28th at 5.30pm to present and discuss this development plan.  This will give members an opportunity of deciding the best way forward and it is important there is a full attendance.

East Cork Junior B Hurling League versus Bride Rovers on 14th of June at 7.15pm.

We are down to play Bride Rovers in Castlelyons on Friday 20.8.21 at 7.15pm in Castlelyons.  We are currently bottom of the table on just one point while Carrigtwohill head it with six points from three games.  However, we have just one game played and that was on the 14th of June when we drew 1-15 apiece with St Catherines.  It is important to have the second team playing games and while we have a third team for the first time this year and they are getting in some games we need sharp lads from the second team challenging for places on Intermediate outfit.  No better test than a game against Bride Rovers so hopefully we will have a full squad.

Castlelyons doing well in East Cork Junior C Hurling League.

Fielding a third hurling team for the first time Castlelyons are doing well in the league with two wins from three games.  We had a great victory over Midleton in our first outing 1-18 to 0-9 but hit the rocks and beaten by Cloyne away 2-13 to 4-13.  But we bounced back for a good win over Bride Rovers 3-13 to 2-7, and this puts us currently leading our section on four points with all three games played.  However, all teams down the field have a chance of making ground as they have lesser games played and qualification is not clear yet.  There is a glut of games coming and players will change so every effort must be made to get lads out and be ready for the championship.  Well done to date.

Congratulations to Lisgoold.

Congratulations to our near neighbours Lisgoold who won their first ever Junior A County Hurling Championship title with a comprehensive win over Harbour Rovers in Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday.  This is a massive boost for a Club who have put in great work in development of their grounds and coaching young players in recent years.

Further development of Páirc Uí Chaoimh and adjoining lands within the Marina.

Cork County Board have created a special website to share information contained in a planning application recently submitted to Cork City Council by the Páirc Uí Chaoimh CTR.  This is in respect of further proposed development of the Páirc Uí Chaoimh Stadium Campus and its adjoining lands within the Marina Park.  Páirc Uí Chaoimh CTR Board’s ambition is to deliver an iconic sporting venue that will not just benefit Cumann Lúthchleas Gael but will also deliver social and economic benefits to both the City of Cork and the local community.

The current proposals, as set out in the planning application, represent a focused investment that responds to the stadium’s experience since opening the redeveloped stadium in 2017.  They address current and anticipated operational issues and provides facilities that meet the expectations of a modern stadium.  The proposals as set out provide an appropriate and sustainable solution to the improvement of the stadium campus and its integration with the Marina Park through the consolidation of ancillary uses at the stadium and the rationalisation of access and parking arrangements.  The website is most informative as it contains detailed information on the development proposal, a drawing and documents library with virtual images and a walkthrough.  The website can be viewed at paircuichaoimhplanning.ie and is very detailed.  There was an excellent webinar delivered by the County Board on Monday evening and it is recommended you view the website, and should you have any submissions they can be made to the relevant stakeholders.

Juvenile Scene.

I see the Fé 12 hurlers were narrowly by Whitechurch 2-8 to 1-12 on Monday evening.  We conceded the Fé 15 football to Kildorrery while Drumtariffe conceded a Fé 18 football game to us on Wednesday 11.8.21. However, while we may not have a victory we competed in a lot of games during the week.  There is a pattern of conceding some football games at juvenile level in the East Section and not just Castlelyons.  Maybe football panels are smaller and more interest in the hurling.  The question of the fixture list increased or congested may be a matter for discussion by Rebel Óg or the project coordinator for football Conor Counihan or maybe its just the traditional hurling drive in East Cork.

Castlelyons make a massive effort on the juvenile front on a weekly basis as there are a lot of games played and it would be great for the juveniles involved to have a little detail on their games. I would appreciate if the management groups completed the report form on the game and drop me a mail at pro.castlelyons.cork@gaa.ie Thanks again.

Take extreme care at O Leary’s Cross

A footballer coming to play in the East Cork junior football championship game between Carrigtwohill and Bride Rovers was luckily uninjured, but his vehicle was destroyed after yet another traffic accident at O Leary’s Cross last Saturday evening. A Fermoy Fire Station Officer had forecasted while attending at the scene of a recent accident at the cross that it would be one of many more to come and how right he was.  It is hard to believe that there was once a licensed premises almost on the crossroads and the ruins are still there.  Maybe they cut the ditches better in the old days but there is certainly no room for larking about the crossroads now. Seriously though, the Castlelyons area has a few dangerous junctions about the village in need of traffic calming measures and O Leary’s Cross requires urgent redesigning to prevent the level of accidents thus prevent injury and potential death.
