Castlelyons play Watergrasshill in Co-Op Superstores PIHC 

Castlelyons are out against Watergrasshill in Páirc na Bríde on Saturday 11.9.21 at 3pm.   While we have some injuries, we hope they will have cleared up this week.  We made it to the final last year but were defeated by Blarney who had their set up right on the night and we were not helped by an early injury to Colm Spillane. If we are to go all the way this year it will be one tough road and we must be prepared to deal with all matters, ensure the best possible spirit and, of course, a little bit of luck is good too.

Looking at our first game against the ‘Hill nothing less than the best will in this one.  There are few better than the Watergrasshill to take advantage of any soft areas.  They play a fast brand of hurling and have the players to deliver a result as they were down two points last year plus a man at the last water break in a similar opening game against Ballincollig in 2020.  But they showed when the going got tough the tough got going and they ground out a win 1-22 to 1-18.  They have players all over the field who give it everything including Aaron Ricken, the O’Regan lads, Sean Desmond, Anthony Cronin, and a very sound goalie in Darragh O’Callaghan. Now, our lads have had a reasonably good season to date and trained well but this is the real test.  No doubt about it the potential is in the group to do well so the best of luck lads.  Castlelyons Abú.

Castlelyons Play Carrigtwohill in East Cork JBHC.

This game is down for 12.md in Lisgoold on this Sunday.  We have done well in the League with a win and a draw from two games which puts us second to Carrigtwohill who have a game more than us played. So, Sunday is important both from a championship perspective and league points count too.  We had a great run out on Monday night in a challenge against Glanworth and a lot of the lads are in very good form.  Our mentors John McCarthy, Ml O Donovan and Brian Carroll will not be able to select the team until after the PIHC game.  However, we will need a repeat of the team effort shown against Glanworth again on Sunday as Carrig are a senior club, and this is their second team, but we can create an upset.  Best of luck lads.

Castlelyons Ladies Gaelic Football Club concentrating on the juveniles.

The 2019 All Ireland Ladies Gaelic Football Final had a record attendance of over 56,000 and the second largest attendance in the world for ladies just behind the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final which was over 57,000. Ladies Gaelic Football is now played in Africa, Asia, Great Britain, Canada, Europe, South America, USA, New Zealand and not exclusively by the Irish Diaspora at all.  Even in this year’s final the dominance of the big counties like Cork, and Kerry was broken as Meath had a mighty win last Sunday.  Bride Rovers, Fermoy, and many clubs around are very strong as all the girls like the game and now Castlelyons are motoring well with their own Club.

Last Monday evening Castlelyons made history as they had their first outing in Ladies football when they played Ballyduff at Under 6s, U8s and U10s. Each of the teams played well and enjoyed their first games and gave a good account of themselves. Thanks to their trainers for having them well prepared, Tom Quirke and Kieran Crowley who were with the U10s, Sarah Coleman was with the U8s and Peter Murphy with the U6s. It was an enjoyable evening and our thanks to Fiona Kent and Ballyduff for the invitation.

Great credit to Fiona and the Ballyduff Club who had everything organised so well. We are returning the invitation for Saturday 11^th September.  Castlelyons U12s are also playing their first game this week in a friendly away to Ballyduff.  All in all, great news for the Ladies and well done to John Leetch and his group as they have done massive work in getting the Castlelyons Club off the ground.  No doubt John, an ardent Mayo supporter, will be in Croke Park on Sunday cheering on his county against Tyrone in the All-Ireland football final. and he might give a blast of the old song the boys from the county Mayo on Sunday night.  Have a great day, John.

Congratulations to Ciara Morrison, winner of Munster Fé 16 Ladies football medal.

Congrats to a budding star, Ciara Morrison who won a Munster Medal with the Cork Ladies under sixteen football team on Saturday.  Ciara plays her club football with Bride Rovers who had their own Lily Murray and Ava Barry on the panel also. Comhghairdeas go léir.

Castlelyons 4-11 Fermoy 3-12.

We had a great evening’s hurling in Páirc Ó Laoighaire recently with two games as Castlelyons and Fermoy Under 13s hurlers set the scene with a proverbial cracker.  Then our intermediate hurlers played Fr O’Neills afterwards as the pitch lighting was turned on for the first time this year and contributed to another good game.  The Under 13 game was refereed by John Ahern more widely known as the Avondhu reporter but handy with the whistle too.  The game was very close all through with some excellent scores as Castlelyons led at half time by a point 2-4 to 1-6.

In the second half Castlelyons pulled away a bit on the scoreboard.  However, proving that the water breaks can help with the right encouragement back came Fermoy with some mighty hurling in the last quarter to nearly clinch the game as a penalty saw them draw level with only minutes left.  The in a welter of excitement Castlelyons held calm and put over a few vital points when needed to win on a score Castlelyons 4-11 Fermoy 3-12. I saw a few right promising hurlers on both sides, so hoping they keep it up. Well done lads especially to Castlelyons and their mentors Shane O Neill and Damien Fleming.

Rebel Óg Fé 15 East Division Two Hurling Plate Semi Final.

Castlelyons 3-7 White Church 2-15.

We had home advantage in this Plate semi-final in Páirc Ó Laoighaire with Sean Crowley as referee in ideal conditions.  Whitechurch were very sharp from the throw in and took over in many parts of the field plus the scoreboard as they led by six points at half time.  However, Castlelyons made a massive effort in a great second half and pulled back the score but eventually Whitechurch had five points to spare at the long whistle.  The standard of hurling was very good as everyone gave their best and no doubt it, we have some good under 15 lads coming through.   Well done lads and best of luck to Whitechurch in the Plate final.

Mayfield 3-12 Castlelyons 3-6 

Castlelyons travelled to Mayfield for this U14 football league match.  Conditions were ideal and the Mayfield pitch was in perfect condition. While Mayfield have struggled with numbers recently, they had a full squad for this game while Castlelyons were short six first team players and we had to call on five U13 players to help us out. It was a good Mayfield team and were soon 5 points to the good before we registered our first point from Ronan Ryan. Mayfield kept us under pressure but playing good football at times we added another 3 points from Luke Morrison. Mayfield continued to keep their score board ticking over and scored a good goal. It was 1-7 to 0-4 at the short whistle.

Castlelyons made a few positional and upped our game as Ronan Ryan banged in a good goal. Mayfield came back with another goal and 3 points. Playing some of our best football Shane Hallihan found the net. Torin O’Brien added a point and coming into the last few minutes there was only two points in it. Mayfield took control and scored their 3rd goal and another point. Playing well through the match Seanie O'Callaghan was fouled by the Mayfield keeper and a penalty was awarded and Seanie clung it which was due reward for his hard work. Mayfield finished with another point leaving the final score board 3.12 to 3.06.  Mayfield were that bit too strong for us, but all the lads gave their best. Well done to Referee Chris Broderick while it’s easy criticise referees but Chris left the game flow, and they say a good referee is not noticed and that would sum him up.

Bandon 4-8 Castlelyons 3-2.

Castlelyons travelled to Bandon on Sunday for this rescheduled game due to Castlelyons parish confirmations on the Saturday.  Then a mix up with the ref the night before then led to the throw in being brought forward from 5pm to 2pm at very short notice.  The Castlelyons started very slow and as a result fell behind a good bit by half time.  However, Castlelyons did very well in the second half but not enough to overcome a strong Bandon outfit and they were happy to reverse the 2019 Under 14 County Final as that day was a Castlelyons one.   However, there will be better day for us.
