Castlelyons 0-23 Dungourney 0-10.

We had a good win in Lisgoold on Saturday evening against a Dungourney side that never got into the game. We started solid at the back as Liam Moroney and his two corner backs cleared a lot of ball.  Dungourney fouled a bit much and we punished them as Colm McCarthy put over 0-4 from frees, Conor McCarthy had a monster long range free and Darren Tobin 0-2 from play to leave us 0-7 to 0-3 ahead at the at first water break.   This was a lead that we held and built on all through the game.  Our backs defended well while Colm McCarthy and Peter Roche (back after injury) done well in the centre and the forwards led by Darren Tobin on the forty all linked up well to lead 0-15 to 0-6 at half time.  Our young players Oscar Hallihan, Dara Spillane and Michael Griffin done very well and put some fine scores on the board.  

Dungourney made a big effort in the second half However Shane O’Sullivan made a few good saves, and we still closed out the game 0-23 to 0-10.   Well, done lads on this victory next up is St Catherines and they are going well in the competition too.  It was brought to notice that the pitch was not lined and no flags out with no scoreboard and one of the teams did not send in a list so there was no program.  Patrons pay to attend these games so the least expected for a championship game is to have mundane matters in order.

East Cork Junior C Championship.

Castlelyons 1-9 Fr O’Neills 2-11.

This was Castlelyons first time fielding a third championship team and while we won the toss to play at home against Fr O’Neills we came up short after a great effort. We traded points early on before Fr O Neills got a fortuitous goal then Ciarán McGann had 0-2 and Mark Murphy had 0-1 to leave the score Castlelyons 0-5 and Fr O Neills 1-3 at the first water break.  Shane O’Flynn had to retire with an injury and was a loss as Fr O Neill tacked on a few more scores to leave it 1-6 to 0-6 at half time and we were well in the game. 

We took over for a while early in the second half as Declan Sexton sent over 0-3 from frees with great accuracy.  We lost Seamus Moroney through injury, and he was doing so well in the back line.  Mark Murphy came back to fill the full back position as Alex Henley came on and later Eoin Murphy replaced Kieran Barrett injured also.  We had a few goal chances but did not take them and a late goal from Ciarán McGann was not enough as Fr O Neills ran out winners 2-11 to 1-9.  Well, done to our lads who gave it everything as we were up against a team with several top-class players and with a bit of luck could got a result.  Well, done to John McCarthy, Michael O’Donovan and Ciarán McGann for their efforts in fielding a team.

Castlelyons continue preparations for Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship.

Our intermediate team continued their preparations for the next round of the PIHC which is down for Riverstown on Saturday 9^th October.  Many of our players are on a dual mission as they are on the Imokilly panel who are down to play UCC this week in SHC and should they win they are out again on Sunday against Seandún at the same venue. Good to see the lads get their senior games as Imokilly are county favourites for the championship this year.  Hopefully, the players senior involvement will not have any adverse effects on our own club preparations for the Inniscarra game.

Castlelyons play St Catherines in East Cork Junior B Championship.

This game is down for Saturday 2^nd October in Rathcormac at 5pm with James Bermingham as referee.  This should be an interesting game as both teams had victories over Dungourney and both teams were defeated by Carrigtwohill in the round robin competition to date. While the Saints are going very well if we play to our potential we are in with a good chance.  So don’t forget we need your support Saturday evening.

Castlelyons LGFA selected for Club2Gether Programme.

Congratulations to Castlelyons Ladies Football Club who are after being selected among just 18 Clubs from all over Ireland invited to participate in the Club2Gether Programme. This is an exciting LGFA club development initiative, aimed at strengthening club structures. The initiative focuses on developing areas such as volunteer recruitment and retention, governance & officer training, games development and sponsorship and fundraising, while also planning to ensure sustainable and long-term structures are in place. There will be free training for the officers and coaches while Clubs will receive resources to assist with building sustainable structures.

The 18 clubs are selected from the four provinces & represent 15 counties, including seven from Ulster, six from Leinster, four from Munster and one from Connacht. Juvenile Scene.

Our Under 17 football played St Catherines on Friday evening last in the league played in Ballynoe. The score was 1-9 to 1-2 at half time in favour of the Saints and they drove on in the second half for a comprehensive win. St Catherines are leading the group with Whitechurch second and Castlelyons are mid table.

Our Fé 13 hurlers played Ballyhea away in Ballyhea on Saturday last.  A Ballyhea man tell me this was a cracking game with Ballyhea coming out on top in the end 3-14 to 4-8.  Castlelyons gave it everything with some great individual displays.  There are eight teams in this league, and all have one game played. St Kevins heading it up on superior score followed by Fermoy, Bride Rovers and Ballyhea with Castlelyons mid table so hopefully we could get a few good results yet.  Keep it going lads and submit a match report when ye get an opportunity.

Castlelyons GAA Special General Meeting on Saturday 2^nd October at 7.30pm.

A last reminder for club members that there is a Special General Meeting of the Club on Saturday 2nd October at 7.30pm in the Centre.  This will give members an opportunity of deciding the best way forward in development proposals and it is important there is a full attendance on the evening.

Happy Birthday to Donal O’Brien.

Happy birthday one of our great supporters Donal O’Brien who has reached the big 70 and what a day he had last Saturday celebrating in the Fr Ferris Field.  Talk about staying young the man walked 70 laps of the field joined along the way by his many friends and family. There were some refreshments, music, song, and dance prepared by St Nicholas’s Athletic Club and his family with, his brother Dicko, acted as MC and he walked walk the distance with Donal. It was Mark Twain who said that age is a matter of mind over matter. If you don’t mind it doesn’t matter.  So, keep it going Donal and wishing you many years of health and happiness from Castlelyons GAA.
