Under 14’s Hurlers are League Champions.

Last Saturday our U14 hurlers played Carrignavar in the U14 Eastern C League Final. The game was played in Watergrasshill on a perfect day for a game of hurling. Carrignavar were physically stronger and bigger than our boys, but that didn't put our lads off.

Castlelyons Under 14 Hurlers - Eastern C League Winners 2014They were determined to secure a win this year. Scores were even all through the first half with our lads trailing by only a point at the interval on a score line of 1-5 to 0-7. This was despite a tally of 7 wides from Castlelyons.

Both teams came out fighting in the second half, with Castlelyons leading by 1 point with five minutes to the long whistle. Then Carrignavar hammered in 2 goals in the space of 30 seconds to go ahead by 5 points. Castlelyons dug deep and came out deserving winners.  The final score was Castlelyons 2-16 Carrignavar 3-9. Congratulations and well done to all involved Parents, players and Managers and supporters.

U15 Eastern A Grade Hurling League

Whitechurch 1-05: Castlelyons 3-09

Last week in Whitechurch our U15 Hurlers continued their fine run with a well deserved victory over the host side in the U15 Eastern A Grade Hurling League. On what can only be described as an atrocious night for hurling with strong winds and heavy rain sweeping across the Whitechurch pitch. Conditions did not suit either team and it certainly wasn't a night for fancy hurling but Castlelyons lads showed great determination to come to grips with the conditions and record a comprehensive victory.

The swirling wind and rain proved tricky for both sides in the first half but after a slow start Castlelyons began to get their act together after the first 10 minutes. Whitechurch were a big physical team and Castlelyons defence and midfield performed outstandingly to keep them from getting through for more scores than they recorded. Up front our forwards took their chances when they came and at half time Castlelyons led by 3-04 to 0-1. Scores in this half came from Mark Spillane (2-02), Barry Murphy (1-01), and Conor McCarthy (0-1).

Second half saw Castlelyons playing against the wind as Whitechurch enjoyed more possession. Again the Castlelyons defence worked overtime, in terrible conditions, to limit the Whitechurch damage. At the end of a hard-fought half Castlelyons emerged as winners on the scoreline 3-09 to 1-05. Scores in this half came from Barry Murphy (0-3), and Mark Spillane (0-2).

U15 Eastern Football League

Youghal 1-02, Castlelyons 7-16

After playing hurling for the last 6 weeks our U15 lads reverted to the big ball last Friday when they travelled to Youghal to take on the home side in a Football League encounter.
This was a beautiful late summers evening and the pitch in mighty shape.  Sure enough our willing Castlelyons U15 lads transferred their recent good form from the hurling league over to football when they outclassed a game Youghal side.

Playing towards the town end in the first half Castlelyons lads were on top all over the pitch and played some fine football in particular some delightful approach work when moving the ball into our inside forward line.  We led at half time on the scoreline Castlelyons 3-10; Youghal 1-2 with the goals coming from Barry Murphy (1), Mark Spillane (1) and David Morrison (1). The points came from Barry Murphy (0-9) and Jack Roynane (0-1).

Second half saw the Castlelyons mentors make a few positional switches and also rotate some of the players to allow everyone to get game time. Again there was some delightful football played in the second half.  Youghal never gave up and were probably unlucky not to register a few more scores but on the night we were the masters.  The goals in this half came from Eoin O Neill (2), Barry Murphy (1) and Pearse Varner (1) with points coming from  Mark Spillane (0-3), Barry Murphy (0-1), Pearse Varner ( 0-1), Jack Roynane (0-1)

Under 10’s

Last Thursday night our U10’s played Ballyhooly in Castlelyons in hurling and football. The hurling was evenly matched with Castlelyons just coming out on top in the end.

Castlelyons U10 Footballers at Fermoy BlitzThe football was a different matter as Ballyhooly got “the bounce of the ball” and ended up winning this match easily in the end.

Well done to all the lads for the great hour’s entertainment.

Last Saturday the lads travelled to Fermoy to take part in a Rebel Óg U10 football blitz.

On the day we had 9 lads who played matches against Glanworth, Kilara Óg and Clyda Rovers. The lads improved greatly on their Thursday night’s performance and came away with three wins.

Under 11’s

Our Under 11 hurlers had a home game against Ballyhooly on Sept 2nd.  This was a great battle with both sides giving their all, it was encouraging to see our lads rise to the challenge and we got stronger as the game went on. Our U11 hurling league has also finished up recently, again the lads finished with 3 or 4 great wins, a couple of defeats as well, but all in all we gave a good account of ourselves at this level.

Under 12’s

On August 27 we went to Youghal to play our last U12 football league game. This was a top of the table clash as Youghal had won all their matches and we had all wins and one draw going in to this one.

However, Youghal were too strong for us on the night and it was they who finished top of the league. While we were disappointed, it was a great run of games for us as we were short some of our stronger lads during the holidays and more so because over half our team are U12 again next year.  This is not the case for a lot of the teams we played so the future looks good here and our lads can be well proud of their efforts in U12 Football this year.

Our U12 hurlers also finished their league with a loss to Erins Own to finish mid-table after some tough defeats, but, some great wins also. We played A grade hurling which meant we were up against the best around. Even though we found the going tough some nights, with players missing etc, when we had everyone, we were well able to compete at this grade.

On Monday Sept 8th we had an U12 hurling game against St Catherines. These games are always close, and both teams gave us great entertainment, hopefully we can meet again before the year finishes up.

Best Wishes to our Intermediate Hurlers in Championship replay

The best of luck to our Premier Intermediate Hurlers as they play Ballyhea in the Championship replay at 3.30pm next Sunday in Kilworth.  Let’s have a mighty turn out of supporters for this game.
