Good display despite defeat.
Castlelyons 2-5; Cobh 2-8
Last Friday night our U16 Footballers were the first Castlelyons Juvenile Team in action for 2015 when they hosted Cobh in the first round of the U16 Football League.
On a very cold and showery night Castlelyons had to line out without a few regulars, and started with the bare 15 players, but the lads that did take the field played their hearts out in what was a very free flowing and entertaining football game. Cobh raced into a quick 3 point lead before a sweeping Castlelyons move resulted in Barry Murphy banging home a good goal 12 minutes into the game. However, two minutes later Cobh goaled themselves to maintain their advantage. Both teams traded points in the next ten minutes with Barry Murphy and Conor McCarthy scoring for Castlelyons. Castlelyons began to get the upper hand coming up to half time and were unlucky when both James McCarthy and Mark Spillane were denied goalsâ by the crossbar and upright. Cobh lead by two points at the short whistle on a score of 1-5 to 1-3.
There was some mighty football played by both in the second half with end to end excitement. A goal from Barry Murphy in the third minute put Castlelyons ahead by a point. Cobh came back and pointed in the tenth minute to level the game and five minutes later they pointed again to go one ahead. Castlelyons were creating lots opportunities and both Pearse Varner and Jack Roynane were unlucky with goal chances. After another Castlelyons attack was cleared in the 22nd minute Cobh counterattacked and goaled somewhat against the run of play.
Castlelyons upped the ante for the last ten minutes and Barry Murphy pointed a free to leave three points between the teams with nine minutes remaining. Castlelyons piled on the pressure and Barry, Mark, Pearse and James Kearney all came close to getting the equalizing goal. With a minute to go Castlelyons were awarded a penalty but unfortunately the Cobh keeper made a great save from Barryâs pile driver and the final whistle sounded to leave Cobh winning by three points. Overall a very good game of football and all the Castlelyons lads played well on the night and with a bit of luck probably deserved to draw this game.

We would hope that, like last year, every family will support this draw which will have fantastic prizes.
The football leagues have kicked off this year for some of the teams and listed below is what age group and grade each team will be playing in:
