Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 17.2.27 2025-02-19 22:26:00

Castlelyons Under 21 footballers defeated by Cobh in semi-final.

Castlelyons 3-7 Cobh 3-14.

An air of sadness descended around Páirc an tAthair Uí Laoighaire on Sunday morning as patrons gathered for our game and discussed the sad loss of jockey Michael O’Sullivan who passed away earlier. The Point to Points in Knockanard and indeed all races were cancelled as a mark of respect.   There was a good attendance at this game with the morning was dull, cool and a breeze blowing downfield.  We started well with Adam Larder hitting the upright and Cees Kouwenberg scoring a two pointer.   Even though a strong Cobh team were on top we stayed in the game by the great work of our backs.  However, a mix up left our goalie Kevin Barry unsighted and left Cobh’s Scott Molloy with an easy tap in goal.  With Cobh leading 0-3 to 1-4 Adam Lardner got on the end of a long free in to fist to the net and bring us back into it.  Again, we finished the first half very well with Dylan Leetch and Cees Kouwenberg adding points. This left the score 1-5 to 1-6 at halftime in favour of Cobh.

Cobh dominated early in the second half and led by five points mainly through their big man up front Scott Molloy who struck over some great frees.  Kevin Barry made two great saves and the backs played very well.   Then our lads who never lacked heart and fight took the game again to Cobh and Ronan Ryan who came on earlier got on a lot of ball.  He was fouled with Cees Kouwenberg putting over the resulting free.  Then Ronan Ryan himself scored goaled, and Shane Hallihan added another peach of a goal with Cees scoring another free to put us up 3-7 to 1-11.  However, we began to tire against an older an stronger Cobh side with Adam Lynch getting on top at midfield for them.  Cobh’s No.7 Mark O’Rourke got up the field with speed to bang in a great goal and they had a further two pointer and a penalty by Molloy.   We finally bowed out 3-7 to 3-14.  The score did not reflect the great effort and work ethic of this young Castlelyons team as they were up against a team of Cobh’s status and strength.  Well done to the management of Liam Moroney, Darren Tobin, Chris Cotter and Brian O’Donovan who are making a great effort to promote football within the club.  The referee for the game was Wilie Wallis of Midleton who did a very good job under the new rules and had two sets of umpires with him.

Support for Referees.

As highlighted at last week's meeting, the East Cork Board has requested that all clubs provide four volunteers who would help referees for matches at our pitches. It very important that we provide support to referees particularly as we do not have any referee in our club. Anyone interested please contact Castlelyons Secretary Con Lawlor.

Clubber TV replaces Rebels Online.

Cork GAA have announced a change of set up for the televising of the Cork GAA Championship for the next three years.  Clubber TV now have the exclusive media rights of Cork GAA which is a change from the Cork based TVM Group.  They will be the official broadcaster for the Co-Op Superstores and the McCarthy Insurance Club Football Championships for the next three years.  In addition to the Cork Club Championship games, they cover championship games Tipperary, Kerry, Waterford, Longford, Louth, Laois, Kilkenny, Offaly, Monaghan, Kildare, Meath, Leinster and Munster Championships.  A pass for a single game is €10.99 and an annual pass is €149.99.  Both Cork Chairman Pat Horgan and Cork CEO Kevin O’ Donovan have welcomed Clubber on board. Jimmy Doyle, a Tipperary man based in Dublin, is the technical entrepreneur and co-founder behind this fast-growing company.  He is seeking a Vat exemption for streaming GAA matches as he bids to boost the game, and this will help them show ladies games which are not yet economically viable for them.

Scoop the Poo and keep your dog under effectual control in the Castlelyons GAA Walkway.

Dog dirt is smelly, sticky, disgusting and can cause disease. It should not be left for others to take care of in our beautiful fully lit walkway.  The Litter Pollution Acts 1997 – 2009 require dog owners to clean-up after their pets foul in on the walkway. Toxocara is a common worm found in dogs. Infective stages of this worm can be found in dog faeces.  Toxocara can also infect humans, mainly causing illness in young children. The worm eggs can only infect humans if swallowed. Children are at risk of infection when they handle dogs or handle toys, footballs, soles of shoes or buggy wheels which have been contaminated with dog faeces. Please keep your dog on a lead and do not allow dogs to wander on the walkway or our pitches unaccompanied.
