The present Castlelyons G.A.A. club was set up in 1948. Castlelyons won the Cork Junior 'B' hurling county championship in 1991, the county Junior 'A' Hurling Championship in 1997, the Intermediate County Championship in 1998 and reached the Cork Senior Hurling County semi-final in 2001. The club progressed from Junior 'B' hurling to Senior hurling in a period of eight years during the 1990s.
The club is presently playing at Premier Intermediate and Junior 'B' Level in hurling, at Junior 'A' level in football, and at under 21 and minor level in hurling and football. There is also a camogie team in the parish, and at juvenile level there are teams ranging from under 8 to under 16.
