Club Lotto Jackpot now up to €8,200

This week’s Club Lotto was held in the Abbey Tavern and the numbers drawn were 1, 3, 22 and 29.  There was no Jackpot Winner on the night. 

However, there were eight Lucky Dip Winners of €20 each as follows: -  Mary Cronin; Stephen O Connor; Julie Dahill; Denis Fenton; Nicola Cremin, Carmel Cotter, Rachel & Gavin; Lorna Murphy.

The Jackpot is now €8, 200.

Matches postponed last weekend due to weather.

Last week we spoke about our new red jersey for clash of colours and away games.  But at the weekend the predominant colour, for Cork anyway, was Orange as there was a serious rain alert.  Robert Frost in his Poem “the rain to the wind said you push and I’ll pelt” and that that’s what happened and it surely pushed and pelted down rain at the weekend. 

As a result, almost all Sunday’s games were postponed.  So for the second weekend we did not have a game as our IHL v Fr O Neills had to be postponed.

Great week for Cork.

Well we spoke about the “Slán Leat” Hurling League win over Galway recently but Cork are far from down as it was a great week.  On Wednesday evening Cork defeated Waterford by 0-17 to 1-10 down in Walsh Park to get on the road in the Minor Hurling Championship for the first time in a few years. 

Our own Niall O Leary captained the team and stood mighty at full back.  This man has all the skills necessary to play at the highest level and when he had to come off at the end with an injury we got a right fright.  Thankfully it was muscular only. 

Cork now await some results before knowing the next opponents after the Leaving Cert in June.  Well done all.

Then on Thursday evening down in Tralee Cork won their fifth Munster U21 title in five years defeating Kerry 3-9 to 1-14 in a cracker.  Nice to see Cobh man and Imokilly Hurler, Kieran Histon, outstanding at wing back. A one-point win down in Kerry does not come better.  Again well done to all.  Sure the Cuckoo is coming and the most mythical of all our wild birds generates a wild excitement for Cork sport especially the hurling - didn’t hear her yet but she but she will be here when the showers go away and maybe 2016 could be a good year for club and county.

Many people query about the development of Páirc Uí Chaoimh.  Well it is flying as work is up to date and on target for a May 2017 opening.  

Good win for Minor Hurlers.

A visit to Páirc an tAthair Peadar on Saturday evening was worth it for entertainment and good hurling as our minor hurling team defeated a strong Valley Rovers outfit on the score 3-15 to 1-15.  County Minor Captain Niall O Leary operating at full forward (due to recent injury) banged in three goals in the first half but as his brother Jamie had to retire with a knee injury he went back centre back in the second half and dominated there too as Keith O Leary drove over a lash of points.  This is the second good win for our minor team playing in a high level in Rebel Óg East Cork A Grade against top strong clubs.

It is early days but the results and signs are very good.  We have star men in our county minor panellists and Colman’s men, etc., but it is a nice fifteen-man outfit and one could not but notice the team contribution from all the lads with a good keeper in John Paul Murphy, a strong full back line of Red Walsh, Seamus Moroney, well able to pluck down the slioter, and Ml Buckley.  We have two very stylish and plucky half backs in Mark Spillane and 15-year-old Peter Roche.  I think Mark Spillane is around 17 and I saw him with no fear in a shoulder charge in U21 football and despite injury he played on.  He is back again now and flying and Peter Roche is showing mighty promise as are other 15 year olds in Jack Kenny, James Kearney and David Morrison operating around midfield and the forwards. Ian Riordan, Peter Varner and Alex Henley are improving all the time.  Well done lads and to your management set up and the Juvenile Club, keep it up.

Looking at the ‘Valleys’ side they scored 1-15 and are a formidable team.  Their goalie was good and had to be at times.  The No 11 and centre forward 16-year-old Daniel Kennelly is a fine strong hurler but found it hard to get away from Niall.  Their No 7 William Hurley playing right across the half back line and all over was outstanding.  This guy is big, strong with a mighty paw and hurling off both sides.  Recently dropped off the Cork U17 Dev Squad we all thought he was actually on the Cork Minor team.  We’ll hear of this lad yet!

Lá na gClubanna – Sunday 8^th May, 2016.

Lá na gClubanna will take place on Sunday, 8^th May, 2016 and hopefully Castlelyons can participate in a special way in this day.  It was decided at the last Club Meeting that we would use this as a special day to commemorate the 1916 Rising by having a day of games, events and fun to mark the Comóradh.  This will involve the Intermediates, Juvenile and Camogie groups.  There is potential for a great day and a meeting will be held shortly.
