U14 Camogie Feile 2016

What can we say about this weekend, for all those involved it had it all, from exceptional team performance, high drama, excitement, tension, jubilation and disappointment. Castlelyons U14 camogie team entered the annual Feile Camogie competition, and we participated in the group stages which was held in a pristine Inniscarra venue on Saturday 30th April’16. Although we are entered into the C grade, this year the team was entered in to a Feile section with Both B & C teams. This team have put a lot of work into date with training and on the day all preparation was well and truly tested. Our First match was delayed in starting due to no referee but eventually started against Kilbree Killeen, this team had beaten last year’s U12 team in the county semi-final and we knew we would have a tough opener. But credit to the girls after conceding a point from a free we took the lead after some wonderful inter play to score a goal. The scores were hard to come by with some fantastic defending by both teams Castlelyons went to the break 1-00 to Kilbree 0-01. After some word of wisdom and a change of referee the second half. For this half we played against the wind and our backs defended like warriors to hold our opposition at bay. Eventually Kilbree managed to score two points and bring the sides level. After a number of attacks by both teams coming close on a number of times to scoring the match finished a draw. In our second match we faced Blarney, the defending champions from last year, this again was a tough match between two evenly match teams but we gradually came on top and began to register scores. At the break we lead to 2-01 to 0-00. Meanwhile our first opponents Kilbree were also winning and we were informed that qualifying from the group could come down to scoring difference. After the break Castlelyons upped their performance further and finished out the game winners. In this match our forwards answered the call and scored some fantastic scores to win 3-04 to 0-00. It all went down to the last match we faced Inniscarra (2) and Kilbree faced Blarney. If Castlelyons and Kilbree beat their opponents, the team that won by the biggest margin would qualify to the later stages of the competition. We played our best hurling of the day in this match at the interval Castlelyons lead 3-03 to 0-0, whilst on the other pitch Kilbree lead 1-08 to 0-00. Mid way through the second half news filtered through that Kilbree had scored a further three quick goals and now both teams were level on scoring difference and points. Inniscarra had now added additional defenders to increase the tension and lessen the opportunities of scoring. After some tactical switches of key players Castlelyons forwards began to open up the Inniscarra defence and create scoring chances and after a few minutes we scored a number of goals. On the final whistle we had beaten Inniscarra 8-04 to 0-00 but no one was sure of the other match score. After a period of high tension, double checking of scores and crossing tees the adjudicator announced that Castlelyons had qualified to the next stage of the completion. Cheers of joy and relief echoed around Inniscarra as the team celebrated qualifying to the semi-final stage of the completion. We later learned that our opponents would be Ballinscarthy and we would be playing the following day in Ballinscarthy at 3.00pm

Feile Semi- Final

After a few hours’ sleep and rest, we were on the bus again this time to Ballinscarthy. Fatigue was very evident as the team loaded onto the bus to make the journey but the girls were in good spirit. Whilst Blarney had won the B Feile last year Ballinscarthy had won the C Feile also as a group winner we knew we were up against probably our toughest opponents to date. On a dull gloomy overcast day the girls took to the field in preparation for the game to commence, and yes the referee was late starting again. Ballinscarthy applied serious pressure on our back aided by the wind and the fall of the field but all the players put their shoulder to the wheel as often before, eventually Ballinscarthy scored a goal from play, but credit to our girls they laid siege on the Ballinscarthy goals for the equalizer but with no success. Ballinscarthy managed to score a second goal from a long distance free just before the break to go into the break 2.00 to the good. Castlelyons started the second half with the wind and hill advantage but never really got any clear chance of scoring. Ballinscarthy on the other hand register three further points, 1 from a free. The effort of the previous day and the long journey now began to show but one cannot but admire this teams resolve and commitment, although we lost the match each and every parent, siblings and club members must admire this bunch of girls and their achievements this weekend. Although we were beaten by a grade higher team the lads were complemented on their performance which the score board did not truly reflect. From the club we would like to thank the girls for the effort they put into this bank holiday weekend making themselves available and the enjoyment they gave to their supporters and mentors. Training will resume again this week in preparation for the up-coming league games and championship later in the year. Congratulations’ to Shauna and Olivia our captains and your wonderful team.

Junior Camogie

Our junior camogie team had a convincing victory over Aghada in Aghada on Friday evening last winning on a score of 1-06 to no score. Castlelyons done most of the damage in the first half and had a 1-2 to no score lead at the break. Our girls playing with great confidence and determination and looked comfortable throughout the hour. We had ample opportunity to score but Aghada defended strongly and placed the majority of their players in their back line. Second half saw us playing against the wind and scoring chances went adrift of the post. Good team performance from our girls but sterner tests await them as they face Clonakilty at home in the last round of the league this weekend with day and time tbc.
