Fr Smith Cup Final

Imokilly 1-19 Castlelyons 1-16

This game played at home on Sunday evening and despite a persistent drizzle was an entertaining affair. We gave a plucky display against the ‘Candy Stripes’ but just came up short at the end.  Part of Lá na gClubanna during which Mitchelstown got the better of Douglas in the Cork Intermediate Football Championship earlier.  We also had Comóradh 1916 at 5.30 pm earlier with Gabriel Doherty UCC, giving the oration, the visit and display of “Sam” and “Liam” and the Juvenile Parade of the Flags with the teams and the Castlelyons Pipe Band.  Thanks to the hard work of the Juvenile and Camogie Clubs we helped with the arrangements and put on a skills display at half time. A great evening for all.

Back to the game which was taken seriously by both teams as their championships are nigh.  We started well with our defence doing good work and Anto Spillane had 0-2 and Alan Fenton 0-1 to go into a three-point lead.   Imokilly came back well as the ‘Hill men O Regan and O Callaghan put over a few scores and Billy Dunne began to find his range.  Eoin Maye put in a massive hour at midfield for us and our forwards went for goals on a few occasion but the shots were out a bit and Declan Dalton made two massive saves from Imokilly one particularly from Aidan O Sullivan.  We were 0-9 to 0-9 at half time and looked good.

Vice Chairman Maurice Carroll presents the Fr Smith Cup to Imokilly Capt Tim Geaney Imokilly were more determined in the second half and scored1-1 early as Billy Dunne hit great for form them.  We did get a few scores but Imokilly opened up a 0-7 gap and a late goal from Aidan O Sullivan and 0-1 from E Maye cleaned up the scoreboard but we could not get through for another score as time ran out.  We had some injuries going into the game and got a few knocks during it so hoping that that all will have recovered for our next game versus Fr O Neills on Friday evening which will be our last before the championship.  Due to the number of games on in East Cork over the week end it was hard work to put out an Imokilly team but full credit to the three Fr O Neills players Billy Dunne, Podge Butler and Declan Dalton who came from their Kildorrery game directly and played again with the Divisional side.  The final score was all the more interesting because if one took of the goal for each side it read 19: 16 in points.

Maurice Carroll, Vice Chairman presented the famed Fr Smith Cup to Imokilly Capt on the night, Timmy Geaney.  He thanked Castlelyons and wished us well in the Intermediate championship.

Castlelyons 4-11 Buttevant 1-12

Barry O connell had playing very wellOur Junior B hurlers are very active and getting in plenty of games this year as we played Buttevant in Castlelyons last Saturday evening.  It was the Cill na Mullach men’s Junior A outfit but they were short a number of regulars.  We did well as we led at the short and long whistles.  Mike Hegarty made a return to competitive hurling and was flying at centre forward while the ‘Macca’ was in mighty form.

M J Dorgan got a hat trick of goals and wound up with 3-2 while R O Regan who was being kept in reserve for the big game on Sunday had to come on for the injured Dunny and Ronan scored 1-3.  Well done to Manager James Maye and selectors Aidan O Sullivan and Colm Spillane in arranging such a good challenge and getting games for all our players.

Castlelyons play Fr O Neills at home on Friday evening in IHL2.

Our Intermediate team play Fr O Neills at home on this Friday evening in the Cork Intermediate Division Two league game.  These boys are handy to say the least as they defeated Kildorrery 1-22 to 0-13 last Sunday and Kildorrery had beaten us the week before.  Fr O Neills now top the League table with nine points from five games whereas we are mid table with six points from five games.

The Noel Furlong trained Fr O Neills have a mighty attitude as three of the team came up immediately afterwards to Castlelyons and played for Imokilly this despite exam time and all.  It is important that we do well in this game both from the point of keeping our League hopes alive and putting in a good hour before the Inniscarra game.  All in all, this should be a great game as our lads are generally in good form too so the best of luck lads Friday evening.
