Castlelyons GAA Notes WE Monday 4.1.21. 2021-01-06 20:32:00

Ringing in the New Year with a Lockdown for a month or two.

Well after a strange but pleasant Christmas it is operation lockdown for the next month or two as coronavirus despite wreaking havoc across the globe Covid has attacked our own land again with an even more vicious streak.   The current wave is extremely serious to our health, wellbeing and, of course, damaging to our economy.  We wish the National Health Emergency Team and our Government the best as they endeavour to provide a safe path to health and a performing economy for a few months which is easier said than done. There may be more pain before the gain kicks in but stay solid and keep the ball on the ground as the wind could be in our favour for the second half of the year. There is clear evidence out there folks that everything from stock market returns to hotel bookings are bound up with the view that vaccines will gradually restore normality to our pandemic ravaged world so, hopefully, we could see a good summer.

We have the guidelines for the protect ion of ourselves and the community, but it was Lessing once said that an abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behaviour.  We can react to these stringent guidelines in different ways and collectively need to assist on another.  Now more than ever our Club assist each other through Social Media, Zoom by giving the best advice and, of course, have a bit of fun.  Club members can help the elderly and vulnerable in our community like we did so well in the first surge. Mar deirtear an seanfhocal ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine so folks let us do our bit again.

Castlelyons Juvenile Committee to hold their AGM shortly.

Castlelyons GAA Juvenile GAA Committee will review the last year at their AGM to be held shortly through Zoom. The committee are working hard in the background to make all the necessary arrangements for a smooth transition in the Committee and those in charge of the various teams in 2021.  Hopefully, the current Officers will remain in position for the coming year as they are so familiar the Covid pandemic which is still with us.

Castlelyons are in line with so many rural clubs working hard with limited numbers of approx. 130 on the books.  A friend of mine in Kilmacud Crokes Dublin was telling me that last year that they had 1,600 children from under six to under twelve and no problem getting experienced parents to cater for them all at coaching level.  We discussed the Castlelyons club and the fact that we were senior and now premier intermediate in Cork hurling with a contribution to the county team over the years he was blown away by the fact that we could play at such a high level in Cork. So, the message is there, keep up the great work up, stay involved especially if you are a former player as you can really help with the juveniles.  Also, the Club needs all parents as we are entering an exciting time of development so have your say, lend some assistance as your contribution is appreciated.

Congratulations to Mrs Nora McCarthy on landing the Rovers Jackpot.

Congratulations to Mrs Nora McCarthy, Coole who won the Bride Rovers GAA Club Lotto Jackpot of €20,000.  She was recently presented with her cheque by Mr Ger Lane, Chairman of the Rovers and Ms Carmel Dooley of Dooley’s of Dooley’s was the seller of the winning ticket.  Well done to Nora a great supporter of our own Lotto over the years too.

Provision of GAA Facilities – much done but a lot to do.

We had a mighty end to the back end of 2019 as the Club purchased almost 10 acres of land ideally surrounding Páirc an tAthair Peadar Ó Laoire, the Clubhouse and Community Centre.  During 2020 while progress was slow due to restrictions on travel and Covid a number of subgroups visited many clubs with recently developed pitches and collated some valuable data..  Under the chairmanship of Gerry Healy, the Steering Committee are now preparing a draft of the proposed overall development which will accommodate laying out a second pitch and either refurbishment or complete rebuild of the clubhouse area. Total emphasis is on the second pitch and clubhouse. Preparations are ongoing for the application of a Sports Capital Grant and Mary Fenton; Helen Hussey and Margaret Doran are beavering away at an early draft of the form with the closing date for final submission shortly too.  Well done to all so far and best of luck to the Club with some important decisions to be made on the overall development.

The Community Centre is looking well already with the new outside lighting bring light and ambiance to the winter evenings around to the village centre.  The refurbishment looks well and is now nearing completion as the painter is about his business, a kitchen due to be fitted and with only a few odd jobs to be done the Centre should be back in action in a few weeks left.  Well done to all involved.

Congratulations to Declan Sexton.

We would like to congratulate our stalwart player Declan Sexton on his recent marriage to Carol.  Best wishes to you both for a long, health and happy future together from all in Castlelyons GAA.
