Castlelyons GAA weekly notes WE Monday 7.6.21. 2021-06-10 11:30:00

Castlelyons Under 12 Hurlers pipped in exciting Rebel Óg East F12 Group 2 game.

Castlelyons 2-7:  St Colmans 1-12

This game was a proverbial cracker played in great conditions under the watchful eye of Denis Motherway in Páirc Ó Laoghaire on Monday evening.  Having seen a piece of their training with the U13 lads on Saturday I knew they were handy, and this was certainly confirmed as they were playing a combination of Russell Rovers and Cloyne who have a strong pick towards our team.  The quality of hurling was great from both teams.  Our lads defended well, done well in the forwards, and put over some great scores both from play and frees.  St Colmans had good players in Brian Cahill, Daniel Walsh Darragh Cahill and the wing back Conor O’Brien really caught the eye. Assisted by a slight breeze St Colmans led by 1-4 to 0-6 at half time.

St Colmans started well again in the second half with a goal.  Castlelyons worked scored a great goal as the ball was worked well down field and Ronan Hickey sent in a scorcher while Rian Lenehan came across from the corner and may have got a touch but put off the goalie anyway and it was game on again. Colmans held out for a 0-2 victory.  Well done to all our lads.  They are anxious, well coached and into the modern game in attempting to play the wings and find their man. Obviously, Manager Shane Hickey, Timmy McCarthy, and Stephen O’Riordan are working hard.  St Colmans had some of the Walshe’s, St Colmans and Cahills of Cloyne on the line former stars too.  Great interest in the game as a nice crowd present.

Team: Sam McCarthy, Daire Quinn, Eanna Cotter, Ben Leahy, Adam Collins, Lian O’Riordan, Rory Lardner, Thomas McAuliffe, Ronan Hickey, Ian O’Riordan, Sean Myers, Darragh Goggin, Rian Lenehan, June Hallahan, and Cian Leahy.  Subs: Cathal O’Keefe, Ned Condon, Cionnaith Cotter, Calum Sice and Ewan McCarthy.

Castlelyons defeated in East Cork Football Junior A League Cup.

Cloyne 6-10 Castlelyons 1-6

Castlelyons made a return to East Cork league football for the first time in four years.  Fielding a youthful side and away to Cloyne they found the going tough as Cloyne recorded a facile victory. Our boys were a little off the pace and football skills required for Junior A football but with a few training sessions and games they will be in better fettle for the championship.

Cloyne dominated from the start as Paudie O Sullivan and Ian Cahill were imperious. John Paul Murphy was under pressure in goal for us but outstanding as he made two massive saves and his kickouts were good to.  He got a nasty knee injury and was replaced by Alan Fenton who normally plays outfield. Richard Morrison (1-3), Davy Morrison, Mike Spillane (0-3) done well for us but in fairness to the lads they are out again this Tuesday evening in a hurling challenge so the team was changed about a bit as one can now bring on nine subs and all our lads received game time. Great to see good numbers turning out down in Cloyne oat 11.30am on a Bank holiday Monday.  Paudie O Brien referee had a good game too.  Our next outing is on Sunday 20.6.21 versus Bride Rovers in Rathcormac at 12 noon and this will prove a stern test and we will be hoping for an improved performance and our final game in the group will be versus Carrignabhfear.

Team: John Paul Murphy, Mike Gearey, Cian O’Leary, Peter Roche, Conor McCarthy, Colm O’Neill, Declan Geary, Jack Barry, Mike Spillane, Shane Moroney, Darren Tobin, Davy Morrison, Brian O Donovan, Richard Morrison, and Chris Cotter. Subs all played: David Beausang, Dara Spillane, Colm McCarthy, Tom Carroll, Alan Fenton, Eoin Barry, and Eoin Maye, Ronan Fenton.

GAA promote Defibrillators in all Clubs through Community Heart Programme.

Castlelyons GAA and Community Centre have two Defibrillators for several years.  One on the sidewall of the Centre and the other in one of the dressing rooms. Hopefully, they are still in working order and people sufficiently trained to use them. Everyone knows someone who has had a heart attack. Having the knowledge of good CPR and having a defibrillator unit is crucial as heart incidents do not discriminate and can happen right across the age range. In the event of an incident in the Club or Centre it is vital it have the defibrillators in order.  Updating the Units or purchasing new Units for the GAA can now be done through the Community Heart Programme and can assist all Clubs.

Help wanted for Refereeing games.

Niall Barrett, Referees Administrator, Cork County Board addressed the last Board meeting and outlined that there was a serious shortage of referees in the County.  There were 200 referees for all levels, Adult, Rebel Óg, Camogie and LGFA.  There are a few new tutors, and a course was recently for 27 referees.  He commended Daniel Shorten of Carbery Division as they checked in with all Clubs and have recruited several potential referees for training. He has requested that all Clubs have at least two referees and has appealed for help. Cork referee Colm Lyons will be doing a root and branch review of all the Divisions and their contribution to the pool of referees.  So, from a Castlelyons perspective it would be great to have a few former players, ladies, or gents, come forward to take up refereeing as our Club could be better in this regard over the years.
