Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 23.8.21. 2021-08-25 11:22:00

Castlelyons GAA Special General Meeting Saturday 28.8.21 at 5.30pm in the Grounds.

The Club are planning a major development on both lands recently purchased, existing lands and the clubhouse. A piece of work has been carried out on available funding including capital sports grants, viewing other club layouts, plus preparatory work on planning permission. The Steering Group have prepared a Development Plan with some options. The movement of the existing pitch further down partly onto new lands purchased thus ensuring additional carparking close to the clubhouse and leaving room to develop and extend the current clubhouse in time.  The development of a synthetic pitch up near the Abbey lands road or down behind the existing pitch is another dependant consideration.  It is generally agreed that a second top class meeting all necessary criteria will be constructed on the new lands purchased.  Accordingly, a Special General Meeting of the Club will be held on Saturday August 28th at 5.30pm to present, discuss the options in this proposed development plan.  This will give members an opportunity of deciding the best way forward and it is important there is a full attendance on the evening.

Castlelyons overcome Bride Rovers in East Cork Junior B Hurling League

Castlelyons 2-12 Bride Rovers 1-17.

It was a case of tosach maith leath na hoibre last Friday evening as Castlelyons junior B hurlers started very well against Bride Rovers in Castlelyons. Ronan Fenton 0-1 Oscar Hallihan 0-1 and Colm McCarthy 0-3 done while our backs done well put us 0-5 to 0-0 up at the first water break.  On the resumption Rovers attached hard and Shane O’Sullivan done very well for us in goal, but they scored four points broken by a Colm McCarthy point and Alan O’Regan doing well put one over to leave it 0-7 to 0-4 at half time.

Rovers fought back in the second half with Donncha Cahill clearing an amount of ball at full back and Damien Buckley put over 0-2.  Colm McCarthy, who had a great evening, put over 0-2 for us from well taken frees and the hardworking Brian O Donovan put 0-2 from play plus 0-1 from Darren Tobin.  But Rovers came back with a well taken goal from Jason O’Keeffe and 0-1 from Jacob Howard to leave it 1-7 to 0-13 in our favour at the last water break.  Oscar Hallihan another young player doing well this season, had a goal for us, but this was cancelled out by Rovers goal from Jason O Keeffe. Then Peter Roche, going well, out over a point.  Towards the end Damien Buckley had a massive point for them and Rovers went for it, but our backs held well, and our goalie Shane O’Sullivan made a massive save almost on the long whistle to give us a well merited two-point victory. This win puts us back in the League again with a reasonable chance of making the playoffs as we now have three points from two games.  Well done lads.

Panel: Shane O’Sullivan, Stephen Casey, Declan Geary, Mike Geary, Jack Kenny, Conor McCarthy, Colm O’Neill, Peter Roche, Brian O Donovan, Alan O’Regan, Darren Tobin, Ronan Fenton, Oscar Hallihan, Dara Spillane and Colm McCarthy, Dave Kenny, Ian O’Sullivan, Dave Beausang Michael Griffin, Gavin O’Neill, Richard Morrison

Castlelyons continue preparations for Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship.

Our intermediate team continued their preparations for the commencement of the intermediate hurling championship with challenge games versus Ballymartle and Fourmile water recently.  We visited the magnificent complex in Ballymartle last week and their massive full-length pitch certainly suited us as the lads done very well.  We were down Leo Sexton, Niall O Leary and Colm Spillane and introduced a few as the game went on.  Good to see many of the lads coming into form but the loss of Colm Barry through injury on the evening and now out for a few weeks is a major setback.

Our second game against Fourmilewater last Monday evening was back home on a tighter Páirc O Laoighaire and thanks to Assumpta Mangon, John Healy and their team for the great work as it was in magnificent order. The men from the Déise are currently doing well in their section of the Waterford senior league that includes Ballysaggart, Dunhill and Ballyduff Lower and are out in the championship shortly.  They fielded inter county stars Jamie Barron at midfield and Conor Gleeson at No 11. There was some cracking hurling in this game and our lads continued to build and show good form as the panel were given an opportunity during the game.  Leo Sexton made a return and was sharp while Leon Doocey playing centre back in place of the injured Colm Barry done well too on a noted opponent.

We are now down to play Watergrasshill in Rathcormac on Saturday 11th September at 4pm in Rathcormac.  The farmer will say do they think of the cows and the builder will say Saturday is a working day.   So 4pm is a most unusual time but this is one of the prices paid for Cork success as the county has a glut of championship games to complete now that they were put back due to the counties progress in various championships.  In fairness the board must deal with autumnal times and find suitable venues.  Maybe a 5pm start would do but that’s up to the intelligentsia too.

Rebel Bounty Draw this Thursday evening 25.8.21 at new time of 9pm.

Well done to all our winners to date in the Cork GAA Rebels Bounty Draw, especially Martina Quirke who won €3,000 and Colman O’ Connell taking €250 in last month’s draw.  There are still four months left. The top prize on this Thursday evening for August is €25,000 plus 29 other money prizes. Our Castlelyons members are hurling well, and it would be mighty to land the big one.  Be sure to tune in to cork gaa.ie this Thursday evening at the new time of 9pm. Thanks for your support and best of luck.

Cork All Ireland defeat was disappointing but already game on for 2021.

The last few weeks were exciting as Cork qualified for the All-Ireland Senior Final versus Limerick and while the Rebels were defeated the future looks very bright.  Last year’s delayed U20 final crown came down Leeside, followed by the 2021 Under 20 title with the last success in this grade 22 years ago. Then an almost perfect display in the minor final with a massive victory over a handy Galway side last Saturday evening with the last success in this grade 20 years ago.  Well done to all who have put in a lost of hard work and planning.  The Rebel Óg system for juvenile games introduced over ten years ago must be seen as a game-changer.  This is gradual rather than immediate but could have lasting success as the club programme of games is good and the development squad structures look excellent.

There was a time when Limerick won three Under 21 All Irelands in a row between 2000 and 2004 but brought no success at senior level.  Then Limerick introduced a strong Academy commencing around 2013 as they flooded UL on Saturday mornings with young hurlers.  They have reaped the benefits of this in the last few years through John Kiely’s leadership.  Kiely has a strong backroom team with him.  Limerick look invincible at present, but they say time nor tide waits for no man.  Cork has a rising red tide, and their day should come with smart thinking and hard work.

Juvenile Scene.

Castlelyons make a great effort on the juvenile front on a weekly basis as there are a lot of games played and it would be great for the juveniles involved to have a little detail on their games. I would appreciate if the management groups completed the little report form on their game and drop it on an email at pro.castlelyons.cork@gaa.ie Thanks again.
