No Cash Sales of Tickets at venue gates for county championship games.

It was only in 2019 Tottenham Hotspur that became the first soccer club in the premiership to go cashless when they opened their new Stadium with a capacity of 62,062. During the opening week they told the supporters to leave the notes, the cars, and big bags at home.  Well, it looks like we must leave the notes at home now for GAA games in rural Ireland too and sure maybe for the better.

Cork County Board are now moving with an initiative to sell all tickets online for their championship games.  Accordingly, there will be no cash sales and no tickets to purchase at venues. While this may present a challenge for some of elderly supporters, all clubs are encouraged to assist such members in the purchasing and printing of tickets, and the County Board office will assist also. The Board advises clubs to perhaps allow their members to use the public sales option as there will be adult / concession / juvenile tickets available.  As regards our game versus Watergrasshill on Saturday 11.9.21 the cost of the tickets are set at €8 apiece and the ticket arrangements will be announced by the Runaí later.  The attendance figures have risen to 250 supporters per Club and there is an additional allocation for players and management of each team.  Of course, this may change upwards in September too.  Clubs are not permitted to stream any games other than those streamed by the Irish Examiner who are in media partnership with the County Board.

Quiet on the local adult games this weekend as Imokilly prepare for championship. 

Our own Intermediate and Junior Hurlers are preparing for championship games on the 11^th and 12^th September and have concentrated in training and honing their skills since the last game against Fourmilewater on last Tuesday.  Both teams have some serious and other niggling injuries.  However, if we are to be successful, we must deal with any drawbacks and be prepared to give the championship a right go. We are down to play Watergrasshill in the PIHC at 4pm in Páirc na Bríde on Saturday 11.9.21.  Then we play Carrigtwohill in the East Cork JBHC at 3pm on Sunday 12.9.21 at a venue to be arranged.  More detail next week.

Imokilly prepare for senior championship game with UCC

Imokilly are gearing up for the senior championship against and UCC towards the end of September.  No doubt about it East Cork is prime hurling country as there are six of the Cork senior panel that reached the all-Ireland final, five on the Under 20 panel that won the final and eleven of the Under 17 panel that also won this year’s all-Ireland final all from the Division.  This was reflected at Monday evening’s challenge game of Imokilly versus Carrigtwohill in Castlemartyr as it was a cracking game witnessed by a big crowd.  Imokilly played good crisp hurling early on, but Carrig levelled out, and while both teams introduced some substitutes during the game it was competitive the end with some excellent link ups and scoring.  The final score was Carrigtwohill 0-26 Imokilly 2-19.  Castlelyons lads Anto Spillane, Alan Fenton, Jamie O Leary, Leon Doocey, Barry Murphy, Jack Barry, and James Kearney all got game time and done well.  Incidentally, great to see development in Castlemartyr as they have huge hurling walls constructed, and a walkway about both pitches plus other improvements.  Worth a visit and chat by any club doing similar works.

Rebel Óg Fé 15 Div 3 East Football Championship.

Castlelyons 7-8 Brian Dillons 2-7

Our Fé 15 footballers had a very convincing win this evening over Brian Dillons on the home grounds in Castlelyons.  We were 3-5 to 0-3 up at half time as Eoin McMurtry & Sean O Callaghan had the goals and were driven on by strong play from midfielders Patrick Dooley and Olan Linehan.  Brian Dillons made it tough in the second half, but Kevin Barry was sound in goal and all the backs defended well especially Ronan Ryan and Shane Hussey. They turned over the ball fast and Cremin, Lardner and McGuire moved well while Richie Barry worked hard.  When Seanie O Callaghan hit a rocket of a goal it was game over.  However, Brian Dillons kept going to the end but overall, it was a good display for Castlelyons as lads were back from holidays and it was our strongest team possible even though we only have five lads on the age. The competition is Round Robin.  We were beaten by St Dominic’s and conceded to Kildorrery due to lads on holidays.  However, we already beat St Vincents and have another game to play versus Lee Gaels and a win here would be great to keep us going. Great to watch Castlelyons do well in a football match so well-done lads and to mentors John Linehan, Jamie, and Keith O’Leary.

Féile Weekend

We had the second weekend of Féile in Cork last Saturday & Sunday and this time it was the turn of the Under 15 Footballers and Ladies Footballers across the county.  Féile is not a big national event this year due to the Covid restrictions rather games held in each county and there will be a special event in Thurles in a few weeks’ time to mark the 50^th Anniversary of the first Féile.

Our own Under 15 team under the management of John Linehan, Keith and Jamie O Leary headed out for Doneraile on Saturday morning and had three games in lovely sun-drenched conditions.  The games were of 24 minutes duration and 13 players aside.

In the first game they had it tough against Kanturk but came out on top by 2-1 to 1-0.  Next up was Kildorrery and they played some verry classy stuffy in this game and ended up with a facile victory.  Then they faced up the home side Doneraile in the decider.  Doneraile had the backing of a large home support. Our lads had a small panel and with little rest were fairly tired.  However, there was only a goal in it to Doneraile at the short whistle. Our lads made a right go at the start of the second half but faced a bit and Doneraile drove on for victory.  Well done to Doneraile for hosting a section and best of luck to them in the finals.

Minor Camogie.

Castlelyons minor camogie girls won out their grade last year and have moved into a tougher grade for 2021.  They were in the group stages of the Minor A championship over the last few weeks and won convincingly at home to Ballygarvan.  However, they hit for Cloughduv and took on the locals.  This game had a very high standard and at times it looked as if Castlelyons could take it, but Cloughduv finished the stronger to win.  Last Monday it was onto the famed Glen Rovers and in fairness to Castlelyons they gave it everything showing great heart, but the Glen were very strong and balanced and won it in the end.  We will now go into the plate competition. Sarah and Ciara Morrison were missed by the team they were injured but will be back for the Plate games should be a big help.

Camogie girls on Cork Minor Team.

Lucy McNulty, together with sisters, Leah and Ava Hallihan were part of the county minor panel that beat Dublin o-15 to 1-11 last Saturday in the Tesco All Ireland Minor Semi Final.  The game was played in St Lachtains GAA Grounds in Kilkenny.  Cork lost one girl to two yellow cards early in the game but held on for a great win.  They now play Kilkenny in the final who defeated Galway in the other semi-final.  The final takes place in the LIT Gaelic Grounds Limerick on Sunday 5.9.21 at 5pm and they they could swing it for three in a row minor champion to the Rebels.  Best of luck to all involved and especially to our own girls Lucy, Leah, and Ava.

Congratulations to Leah Hallihan who just her day after the county camogie minor panel played in the Munster Final of the Ladies Minor Football Munster final with Cork and scored 1-5 against Tipperary.

Castlelyons Under 12 Hurlers going well in Division 2 East League.

Castlelyons had a good victory over Lisgoold away on Monday evening.  The pitch was in mighty order on a fine evening and Sean Crowley referee left the game flow which helped to make it exciting.  Lisgoold ever improving these days at all levels went very well and clocked up an early goal. Then a sharp ground shot from Rian Linehan resulted in a good goal for us and Sam McCarthy let fly with a great shot to the net followed up by a good point.  These were highlights of our scores in the first half as all the lads worked hard and the half time score was Castlelyons 3-4 Lisgoold 3-1.  Castlelyons changed about their team in the second half a bit and finished well winning on a score of 7-10 to 5-5. I see that they had a comprehensive win over Erins Own and a one-point loss to Whitechurch Manager Shane Hickey tells me they are now in the semi-final and hopes to get a bit of work into the lads in preparation for the next day out.  Well done boys.

Progress of Under 13s in football and hurling.

The U13s played their last football match in the league last Thursday with a hard-fought win against Bride Rovers on a score 1-10 to 2-2.  They defeated Kildorrery also in the league, but St Catherines are the form outfit in this football section having won all their games including defeating Castlelyons. However, Castlelyons were second in the group so well-done boys. In hurling, the U13s are due to play their final league match this Thursday evening at home to Fermoy have already defeated Killavullen but lost comprehensively to Bride Rovers.

Manager Shane O’Neill says he is hopeful that that Rebel Óg will run a Cup and Plate for the top and bottom 2 teams which will give the lads more games in the coming weeks.
