Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 4.10.21. 2021-10-07 18:34:00

Big Castlelyons contingent on the Imokilly and UCC Senior Panels.

Imokilly 1-21 – UCC 1-10

This game last Wednesday was the proverbial cracker even if both teams started handy and were off target a bit as they level on 0-4 apiece at the first water break.  On the resumption really came to life as Sheamie Harnedy was fouled and Liam O Shea put over the free, and Shane Conway responded for UCC.  Then Anto Spillane cut in from the wing, left his man for dead and placed a peach of a goal. Our backs done as Brian Lawton and Shane Óg O Regan had points, but UCC kept the scoreboard ticking over too.  It was 1-11 to 0-11 at half time.

The hurling was mighty in the second half as both teams played some very stylish rather than physical stuff.  They exchanged a few points.  UCC were now hurling with great purpose as Paddy Kadell, flanked by Eoin Carey, Kilworth and Kildorrery man J Keating defended the half line while Mark Keheo, Neill Montgomery, Shane Conway, all top county players were buzzing up front.  Mark Kehoe set up a goal for Eoin Power who gave Imokilly goalie Jack Barry no chance as he doubled bullet like to the net.  This with a few points put the College in the lead heading home for the last water break at 1-16 to 1-14 and looking good. However, in a hectic struggle for supremacy good men stand up and none more so than mature warriors Colm Barry, John Cronin, Sheamie Harnedy, and young Mark McCarthy as Imokilly came back to lead home to the last whistle, winning 1-21 to 1-10.

Another great night for the Barony of Uí Mac Coille and Castlelyons too. Our own Colm Barry No. 3 for Imokilly and Niall O’Leary for UCC were captains on the night and at one stage there were seven Castlelyons on the field representing both sides with a springling in the subs too. It was exciting too as fellow club men gave way to senior rivalry when an invader of space was quickly jostled back out to his own territory.  Sure, it’s all in the game.  Incidentally, well done to the referee Diarmuid Kirwan who for the most part threw in the ball and got out of the way leaving them at it.  Maybe that style would not work all the time if it was more physical, but it certainly helped in last evenings cracker.

This was followed up on Sunday evening by a facile victory over a short staffed and weak Seandún division side on a score of 4-36 to 0-16.  Of course, Imokilly were down Sheamie Harnedy, Anthony Spillane, Kieran Histon and Ciarán Joyce and Willie Leahy on the night.  Delighted to see our own man Alan Fenton getting his game plus Leon Doocey making his debut in the half back line too and both did well. Imokilly, now head for a county quarter final with a full deck again and on this form will take stopping no matter who are the opposition. Well, done to the players and mentors as the wagon is rolling again. Imokilly Abú.

Big game in Riverstown on Saturday night versus Inniscarra in the PIHC.

We are out in the next round of the premier intermediate championship in Riverstown on Saturday night at 7.30pm n Riverstown.  We all remember a few defeats by these boys over the last few years before coming out on top last year in a tense battle in the Páirc Uí Chaoimh.  They were narrowly defeated this year by Valley Rovers and have beaten Watergrasshill while we have won our games against the same opposition.  However, we have had no game with a while due to Imokilly and UCC involvement in the senior championship while the Muskerry men have had two big challenge games and are getting into big form.  While we haven’t had a game we have been hurling and the training sessions must be binding.  However, we must be prepared to give it all on Saturday night as this will be a severe test.  Best of luck lads.  We would appreciate all possible support and don’t forget to get your ticket on time off the Cork Website link.

East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship

Castlelyons 2-11 St Catherines 1-14.

This game was in Páirc na Bríde on Saturday evening.  It was a good evening for hurling and with expectations of a good game and they were not disappointed as it was close throughout with some patches of very good hurling. It was 0-4 apiece at the water break as we scored three frees with Peter Roche scoring from play.  But the highlight of the first quarter was when a Saints forward was going through and Eoin Barry blocked down his shot with goal on. After the water break the hurling lived up as Catherines dictated with 1-3 without reply as their men Conor Kearney, Ronan Clancy and Kevin Barry did a bit of damage.  However, back came our lads as the half back line and midfield came to grips with the game.  Dara Spillane made ground and was taken down for a penalty and Conor McCarthy clung it.  Then Conor McCarthy put over a monster free to leave the score at half time St Catherines 1-9 Castlelyons 1-5.

On the resumption Catherines put over o-1 and then you could see we took over with some great stuff as Colm McCarthy had 0-2 from frees.  Oscar Hallihan an improving young player won possession out on the sideline turned his man and cut in for a great goal and then he scored 0-1 from play. Colm McCarthy put over 0-1 from play and When Richie Morrison who came on for Ml Griffin was fouled Colm put over that free too. But Catherines showed great fight and put over 0-3 in a row from frees.  Colm McCarthy was on target again for us with a great free but in great excitement Catherines levelled fifth a free.  We did get a opportunity to clinch it with a free from out on the wing to clinch it, but it was very awkward and unfortunately despite a great effort it hit the upright. So, the game was a draw, and we needed the wind to stay in the championship.  Thanks, for a great effort lads.  The future is bright as it’s young team, and to the management John, McCarthy, Ml O’Donovan, and Brian Carroll as they made a great effort too.

Panel: S O Sullivan, E Barry, L Moroney, S Casey, D Geary, C McCarthy, Ml Geary, P Roche, C McCarthy, B O Donovan, D Tobin, A O Regan, O Hallihan, D Spillane, Ml Griffin, D Beausang, C O Sullivan, D Morrison, D Kenny, I Ryan, and I O Sullivan.

Junior C Team defeated in East Cork Championship.

Our Junior C team played Cloyne at home in the Championship on Sunday evening but were comprehensively defeated.  Cloyne for a third outfit had had right good stock and were far fitter than us.  Declan Sexton was not available due to injury and Ciarán McGann had to come off due to war wounds from the last game.  However great credit to the lads for field a third time as this is our first year and now know what is required.  Hurling in East Cork is very strong and often lads drop easily enough but have still a lot to offer so they give it a go at Junior B or C level.  So, lads a little bit of more regular training will more than compensate for being a year older next year.  Up and at it again and bring on the younger lads.

Big games back in Castlelyons.

It was Dickens in his tale of two cities said it was the best of times it was the worst of times; he spoke about despair and hope in that book too.  Hopefully we are back again with hope to better times and great to see several good games in Páirc Ó Laoighaire in the last few weeks as we are getting back to a sense of normality. More recently we had Kilworth against Aghada in the PIHC and winning 0-28 to 1-16 while we hosted a PIFC in which Mitchelstown v defeated Glanmire 4-12 to 1-6.  In the hurling game we saw Cork player, Eoin Carey, shine from centre back and scoring 0-4 while in the football we witnessed a great display by Cork footballer Cahal O’Mahony Cork score 2-4 for Mitchelstown.  Two men for the future.  The pitch was in great order and thanks to our man John Healy with Assumpta Mangan, Supervisor CES, and especially to Liam O’Neill and Tony Rodgers of the scheme.

Theresa Walsh Memorial U14 Hurling tournament.

Our U14s were invited to Rathcormac on Saturday morning for the Theresa Walsh memorial hurling tournament. Four teams participated Glen Rovers, Bride Rovers, Blarney and Castlelyons. It was a very well organised and teams were evenly matched. The games were twelve minutes per half with sic minute interval with the final fifteen minutes per half

In the first game the Rovers played the Glen and got off to a good start with a goal and a point, but the Glen got back into the game and levelled the score. It looked like the match would end in a draw, but the Rovers got the winning point coming up to the final whistle. We were up next against a good Blarney side. We got off to a good start with Richie pointing from play and Adam added 0-2. Blarney came back at us and tapped over 0-2. The second half saw Torin tap over 0-1 and Blarney replied with a point. Adam put over another fine point only for Blarney to keep the score board ticking over with a fine point. We were 0-5 points to 0-4 ahead and nothing between the teams when Cathal Sheehan got the important goal. Blarney didn't lie down and put over 0-2 but in a welter of excitement we won favour 1-5 to 0-6.

There was very little delay before the next match between the Glen and Blarney and the Glen came out on top in another close match. Then we played Bride Rover and Ronan scored 0-1 but answered by Rovers 0-1.  We stayed with them for a while but in the end, they came out on top 2-7 to 0-5. Well, done to the lads and especially our two U13 lads John O'Neill and Dylan Goulding who played well. Congratulations to the Rovers who were the better team and our thanks to them for inviting us to the tournament. There were refreshments for the lads, mentors, and supporters after the presentation of the trophy and all our lads got a nice medal to commemorate the tournament. Another nice touch from Bride Rovers. This brings an end to the U14 season and thanks to all.

Castlelyons GAA Special General Meeting.

A Special General Meeting of the Club was held on Saturday night last. A development proposal was presented, and various options discussed.  Our chairman John McCarthy introduced and chaired the meeting and here were a lot of issues outlined as John Coleman, Margaret Doran, Mick Spillane, Declan, and Leo Sexton made various presentations to the club members.  There was good debate and discussion, and it was decided to commence development with a second pitch as this was the most urgent requirement for the Club and other phases would follow in course.  In the current financial climate this piece of work will take a while to achieve but there will be a circulation of a brochure setting out more detail soon.  A sincere thanks to all the members who attended.
