Dominant Display to Down Cloyne

Castlelyons 1-25 Cloyne 2-10

Cloyne travelled to Castlelyons last Friday evening to play us in the Intermediate League. We knew a win would ensure that we played Division 3 league next year so it was important to get a win so we would be playing quality opposition next year. It was great to see Niall O’Leary with a Castlelyons jersey on his back again. He had a disappointing end to the season with Cork, but he started this game well and opened the scoring for us with a long range point after Cloyne scored an early free. Castlelyons kept the pressure on early with Peter Roche and Alan Fenton getting on the scoreboard with well worked points. The turning point in the game came after 10 minutes when a long high ball was delivered onto the Cloyne 13-yard line. David Morrison was the first man to react and pulled on the ball first time and fired it into the corner of the Cloyne net. We out scored ouopponents 1-6 to 0-1 over the next 10 minutes. Alan Fenton remained deadly from placed balls. He scored a great point after getting a sideline cut straight to his hand by Anto Spillane and fired it over the bar on the run from 40 yards. Cloyne fought back and nabbed a goal through Paudie O’Sullivan after he intercepted a pass. We responded well and matched Cloyne 0-4 each in the remaining minutes of the first half to leave it 1-14 to 1-7 at the interval.

The Castlelyons domination continued in the 2nd half. Niall O’Leary and Colm McCarthy both got their 2nd points of the game as we swapped points with Cloyne. Castlelyons drove home their advantage and scored 6 on the trot to leave the game 1-23 to 1-09 after 50 minutes. Alan Fenton giving a masterclass at scoring from play and from placed balls. Anthony Spillane was playmaker for many of our scores with great off loading and passing. Leo Sexton and Colm Barry were commanding in the spine of our defence with Jack Waters and Bryan Carroll hoovering up oceans of loose ball. Cloyne scored a consolation goal near the end, but we finished the game strongly with substitute Alan O’Regan firing over a fine point. The final whistle was blown shortly afterwards, and we won the game by a convincing 12 points. Championship is only 4 weeks away now so all our focus will be on our first game against Carrigaline.

Thanks for you Contributions
Donation Scheme on Track
We are delighted with the progress being made with our donation scheme so far and just blown away by the support from the local community. We have over halfway to our target of €420,000 from all the pledged donations. This does mean that we still need to raise more funds over the coming weeks. Every donation, big or small is appreciated so if you are able to help it will be put to use straight away. We hope to start the development of the new pitch in the next few weeks so we can have it up and running for the 2023 playing season. We need to raise as much funds as possible in the initial phase to start our development. Your donations will help develop top of the range facilities that will benefit every player of all ages for years to come. If you still have not contributed and you wish to then contact club treasurer Mick Spillane please on 086-8196232.
