Rebel Óg East Division 2 Minor Hurling Championship
Mayfield 1-9 Castlelyons 4-27.
The game was played up in Mayfield’s second pitch and it was in good order after the rain, The evening was damp, and calm and the ball was moving fast. Sam McCarthy set the tone for a strong Castlelyons showing as he banged home an early goal. Our goalie Alex Quirke was sound, and our backs and midfield fed in great ball as our forwards picked off some great scores. Sam McCarthy and Darragh Bransfield scored two goals and a few points apiece, Khaled Abdelrazik got some great points from frees and play as did Ciarán Murphy while all six forwards scored. The referee Cathal Egan had a good game too. The difference between the teams was the ‘first touch’ and we had it good while Mayfield could be much better. We were missing a few players and lads took the opportunity to claim championship places by showing up well. No doubt there will be bigger test ahead in our group. St Catherines defeated St Vincents and Nemo Rangers defeated Cobh in our group this evening and we are out next against Cobh at home on Wednesday 30th July. Tosach maith leath na hoibre.

Cork off colour as Tipperary take the blue Riband of hurling.
Cork supporters travelled to Croke Park last Sunday in confident mode and deservedly so after failing to Clare last year in a cracking final. Sunday morning in Dublin was very wet and driving to the capital was tough too. The Croke Park pitch team led by Stuart Wilson and his hard-working pitch team were in at 6am giving a last cut to the pitch and this was the tenth cut in a week. Their numbers game are scores of a different nature as they checked firmness, moisture, and traction and other details to ensure the pitch has perfect playing conditions to tailor the pitch to top GAA playing conditions. When Cork and Tipperary ran out onto the pitch was in perfect condition and they day had dried up.
The welcoming roar was deafening as every available ticket was snaffled up and the supporters made it to the game in their thousands with many disappointed to be left at home. Looking around the Stadium it certainly seemed the Rebels outnumbered their rivals as it was a sea of red in a total crowd attendance of 83,000. Cork’s form was relatively good all season as they had taken the League and Munster titles in style. They started well on Sunday too and the goal before half time sent more than a whim of expectation that they could win the day. But this was not to be as any repeat of previous great battles between these teams did not materialise and Tipperary had a facile win and congratulations to them.
While there is no need to discuss the game. Cork have contested the last two All-Ireland finals and did win two trophies already this year. The team have thanked supporters for their unwavering support during the season and, indeed, gave the supporters some great moments too. They are disappointed with the outcome of the final but have vowed to learn and build. No better way now but to take full stock of the upcoming club championships commencing and unearth some new talent for the panel to raise the hearts for again for2026.
