Defeat for Castlelyons junior hurlers in the first round of the championship.
East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship.
Castlelyons 0-17 St Catherines 1-16.
This game was played in Páirc na Bríde on Saturday evening before a good crowd. Castlelyons played well but were careless in their play allowing a very determined St Catherines back into a game they eventually won by two points. We were leading by five points after 15 minutes 0-8 to 0-3 with scores from several players Brian O’Donovan, Brian Spillane, Jack Cremin, Shane Flynn and Ronan Fenton. At this stage our backs were hurling well although Catherines did hit a few wides and Eoin Barry made on great catch in goal for us. However, St Catherines got the upper hand around midfield and the half forward line as we committed a little too much fouling under pressure. Their midfielder Diarmuid O’Connell who was excellent on the frees all through with a style like Darragh McCarthy of Tipperary punished us a lot. They got on level terms at 0-8 apiece and then a ball swept up field was finished to the net by Stephen Cotter put Catherines ahead. But we got back into the game again and two points by Brian O Donovan for us and one to Catherines left the score 0-10 to 1-9 in favour of Catherines.
Catherines had a slight breeze for the second half playing towards the town goal. We started well again with Alan O’Regan going well and he parted to Brian Spillane, but their goalie saved well. We had two points from Ronan Fenton and Dunny. But Catherines kept the score ticking over. Our full back line held up well under pressure and Conor McCarthy made some rallying clearances at half back. Brian Spillane and Jack Cremin had scores as we drew level 0-16 to 1-13 with eight minutes to go. Despite the pitch being in immaculate condition there were several rucks and Catherines came good our most of them. We exchanged points again and then man of the match Brian O’Donovan tacked on another for us to level again. In the last minute of the game Catherines got a very dubious sixty-five and Diarmuid O’Connell nailed it. We did make a rallying attack but fouled again and the again O’Connell was unerring this time from well inside his own half to give Catherines a two-point win.
The game while very competitive was played in a sporting manner with referee Mike Carey doing a good job in leaving play go and if there was a free, he explained the cause. There are three groups of four in this championship with some very good teams and we are in a lively group too. We now play Aghada in Carrigtwohill on Sunday morning 18th August at 11am. This is a must win game so best of luck lads.

Castlelyons Senior Hurlers face Ballyhea in the SAHC In Kildorrery this Saturday evening.
Castlelyons play their second-round senior ‘A’ hurling championship in Kildorrery this Saturday evening at 6.30pm. Our opponents are Ballyhea, and they have always provided stiff opposition to Castlelyons down the years. Ballyhea lost by 0-7 to Inniscarra in the first round but they put up a good show against a clever Muskerry side led by Sean O’Donoghue. So, they will be all out against us and certainly we must not give away too many frees as John Morrissey put over 0-12 for them in the Inniscarra game with 0-10 coming from frees and Pa O’Callaghan back fit and well scored 0-4 in that game. We were under pressure for long spells in the Bishopstown game but upped the gears in the second half to come home with a few points to spare. We have a lot of injuries with Oscar Hallihan and Barry Murphy out for the season. Hopefully, other lads will make it back and we are training well. So best of luck on Saturday evening. Premier IHC Mallow versus Lisgoold in Castlelyons this Sunday.
Last week we had a fine crowd and a good game as we hosted the IAHC game between Ballygiblin and Erins Own who won by three points. Well, this week we host a Premier Intermediate Championship game as our neighbours Lisgoold take on Mallow. Both teams were both defeated in their first-round games as Lisgoold fell to Valley Rovers and Dungourney defeated Mallow. Lisgoold have come to prominence in recent years propelled by the outstanding John Cronin and, of course, more recently by Diarmuid Healy who landed 0-3 in the All-Ireland final before surprisingly being replaced. Mallow may not have stand out players but have many solid performers. So, expect a cracker with both teams fighting for their lives to stay in the championship.
Thanks to all the stewards the last day and those who prepared the pitch. We are asking club members to yourself available for stewarding on Sunday. We will be gathering at the top carpark at 11.30am.
Rebel Óg East Under 12 Football Group Four Phase 2
Castlelyons 4-6 Fermoy 1-7
Our Under 12 team had a great win against Fermoy in the football game played in Castlelyons on Saturday. on Saturday. We started well with Rìan Fitzgerald, scoring a point from the throw up. Fermoy were working hard and got some nice points from Sean Noonan. Robbie Wallace and Séan Ekechukwu replied with points for us, and Eoghan McCarthy got a good goal as we led 1-4 to 0-4 points at halftime.
We were under a bit of pressure, but our backs were playing very well, keeping the Fermoy forwards quiet with Jack Cronin and Liam Cashman attacking every ball. We made a few changes, and this helped us get more possession around midfield. We scored three goals through Cìan O’Donovan, Rìan Fitzgerald and Séan Ekechukwu. Fermoy did make a comeback and got a good goal, but we held on for a very good win. This puts us third on the table with four points from three games. Mayfield and Bride Rovers are ahead of us. Our Under 12 team take to the camán next Saturday the 17th of August as they play Aghada in Castlelyons at 2pm and they are second in this league headed by Bride Rovers so best of luck lads.

Rebel Óg Under 18 Minor Football Championship.
Castlelyons 1-10 Cobh 2-12.
This game was played in Castlelyons on Wednesday evening. We faced a strong Cobh team and were down Adam Lardner through injury. Cobh were very strong and seem to be really concentrating on the big ball game and they were on top for a lot of the game. However, we fought very well with Shane Hallahan getting some great scores. On one occasion he fielded immaculately beat his man and cutting in from the left laying off to Ciarán Murphy who scored a good goal. Ronan Ryan and Dylan Leetch worked hard at midfield we played well in the second half but not enough to overcome the seasiders. We have two losses from two outings, and it looks as if we will bow out of this year’s championship.
However, we are in action in the hurling on Wednesday 13th August as we play Nemo Rangers in Trabeg at 7.30pm. We head the Group with Nemo second to us on the same points so it should be a competitive outing. If we play to our potential, we could do it so best of luck lads.
Camogie – Congratulations to Aisling Cotter.
Congratulations to Aisling Cotter who was on the Cork Under 14 Camogie team in the inter county blitz in Dunganny, Co. Meath last Saturday. This is the Meath GAA Centre of Excellence and Cork had a great day coming home with Shield after defeat by Kilkenny.
Cork fail in bid for three in a row Camogie senior titles.
Cork were the form team coming into this All-Ireland senior Camogie final as they had won the League and were heading for three in a row in championship titles. Galway provided the opposition and showed hunger and aggression from the throw-in. The game was a bit fiery, and Cork were awarded a penalty, but it was saved while Galway scored a cracker of a goal to lead by five points at half time. Cork were down to fourteen for the second half as a Cork player received a straight red card. They came back in true Rebel fashion to level the game in the closing stages but an outstanding point from a free way out under the Hogan Stand by the Galway Captain Carrie Dolan was enough to send the O’Duffy Cup to the West.
