Co-Op Superstores SAHC Final refixed for this Saturday 25th October at 6.30pm.
Well, it is what it is now. Our senior A hurling county final joust with neighbours Bride Rovers was called off last Saturday evening due to an impending orange weather warning. Maybe it could be played earlier in the day, but it is easy talk afterwards and we will all learn from the experience. Anyway, we are now down to play this game in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on next Saturday 25th October at 6.30pm. Sure, it’s an opportunity for the followers in the villages and town lands of the two parishes to cherish the chat in the extended run into the game and to fly the flags, buntings and posters for another week. Well done to all as Castlelyons parish is nicely adorned with flags, buntings and posters.
We had our press night and contributions to the various newspaper last week. We now wish our team a good week refocusing and finetuning their skills and preparation. Looking forward to a great game and wishing Ian McCarthy, Bandon the referee a good game too. Finally, we are looking forward to your support on the evening as always. Castlelyons Abú.
Work has commenced on Phase Two of Castlelyons GAA Club Development.
We are delighted that work has now commenced on an exciting second phase of development in the construction of a Synthetic Pitch size 40’ by 80’. This will be fully fenced, equipped in with Floodlights and a Hurling Wall attached. The contractor for the works is Hourihan Sports Field Development & Civil Engineering. They are a family run business that operates throughout Cork, Munster and Ireland. Synthetic pitches are low maintenance, can be used all year round and provide great opportunities for the Club. The project will take some months and will be ready for next season. We are also constructing ladies, gents and accessible toilets at the back of our new Stand. Planning permission for these works is arranged.
We have gained funding for this second phase development through Government and other grants. We will have a small shortfall and if you are new to the parish and/or wish to assist please note our Community Contribution Scheme is still open and you can speak with any member of the Steering Committee or Club Committee member.
Moving On.
Last Saturday I was left with mixed feelings for all Gaels looking forwarded to the games in the Páirc and their cancellation due to bad weather. I thought of a song well known in Clare and I added a bit to suit the Castlelyons faithful. It said the autumn winds are here again and the night winds chilly grow. The harvest moon has gone behind as that old grey rain begins to flow. Summer days are well gone now as we missed our hurling game. We stay in wait another week and hope the day is fine. Here’s to our boys in green and gold you have the hurling mould. We will go with glee down by the Lee and cheer you towards your goal. Come on Castlelyons.
Castlelyons Annual Gold Medal Tournament 9th April 1932.
Castlelyons 5-1 Watergrasshill 5-0.
Fermoy 3-2 Bride Rovers 1-2.
Our Club was active in with the holding of the annual silver medal tournament played in Castlelyons on the 9th of April 1932. It attracted a good-sized attendance. Both games produced many exciting passages, and hurling was well up to standard. Quicker into their stride Watergrasshill had raised the green flag before the game was a half a minute old. They had no further major scores before Castlelyons replied with a well taken goal just before half time. After the change over Castlelyons attacked with grim determination but the ‘Hill backs held them at bay and ten minutes had elapsed before their forwards succeeded in breaking through for a goal and a point. Castlelyons then had three further goals and seemed set for a comfortable win, but a great rally by Watergrasshill in the closing stages brought them within a point of their opponents.
In the second game both teams found it hard to settle down and fifteen minutes had elapsed before Bride Rovers opened the scoring with a point. Fermoy then had two great goals before Bride Rovers replied with a major. In the second half Fermoy asserted their superiority and with their forwards getting a grand service from their centre field pair ran out deserving winners. There is a lot of history attached to all the clubs and if Castlelyons followers have any old history or photos on the Club please contact and committee member.
