Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 24.11.25.

Progress Report on Second Phase of Development – Castlelyons GAA.

As you are aware our Club has undertaken a very ambitious development project in the last few years since we purchased and developed land adjoining Páirc an tAthair Peadar Uí Laoighaire.  The second phase of development has commenced recently with major works already ongoing on the construction of a Synthetic Pitch 40’ by 80’ fenced in with Floodlights. We will have a Hurling Wall on the lower side part of the Synthetic a Hurling Wall, and this will be constructed shortly.  The foundation for the Ladies, Gents and Accessible Toilets is also laid.  This building will be on to the back of the new Stand.  We have gained funding for this second phase development through Government and other grants.  We do have a shortfall in the funding, and our Community Contribution Scheme is a saviour.  Thanks to all those who have contributed as we are now in year four of five and your continuance with the annual contributions is really appreciated.

The Club is very strong these days with good numbers, and we are competing with great success and enjoyment in so many grades of juvenile and adult in the ladies and gents’ teams. We would appeal to new people in the parish or those who can do so to join our contribution Scheme.  Details of the scheme can be got from our club treasurer and chair of the steering group Mick Spillane, any member of the steering group or, indeed any members of Castlelyons GAA Committee.  Ní neart go cur le chéile.

Congratulations to Cian O’Donovan, St Nicholas Athletics Club

Comhghairdeas mór to Cian O’Donovan for his heroics in the National Cross Country Championships in Derry.  He finished a most in a most credible sixth place in his age group and secured an individual medal. Cian was also the first Cork athlete home he was also the second scorer for Munster, who finished as the top province, earning him a gold medal.  This is an outstanding achievement and congratulations to St Nicholas Athletics Club and his family.  Cian has starred on the Castlelyons under twelve hurling and football teams all year who won a total of five cups and we are delighted with his most recent success.

Dr. Harty Cup - Under 19 A Hurling

St Colman’s College Fermoy: 3-19 CBS High School Clonmel: 1-15

St Colman’s College Fermoy had a good win over CBS High School Clonmel, but it wasn’t enough to secure qualification from Group 2 in the Dr Harty Cup at a bitterly cold Bansha on Wednesday afternoon. It was a game they had to win to stay in the cup and this depended on other results.

Castlelyons man Adam Lardner got his first start and had an outstanding game scoring 0-3. Sam McCarthy also got game time in the second half while Thomás McAuliffe and Ciarán Murphy were on the panel.  Cormac Barry, Bride Rovers, was the star of the show with an impressive tally of 0-12 and Denis Fitzgerald also of Bride Rovers landed 1-1.

Unfortunately, Midleton CBS cruised to victory over De Le Salle College Waterford on a score 2-14 to 0-12 and they progressed from the group ousting Colmans from the competition.  Midleton are now the sole Cork College in the quarter finals, and they last won the Harty in 2019 and were also the last Cork College to win it twenty years ago as well in 2006.  Thurles CBS have progressed and are endeavouring to make it three in a row have won it in 2024 and 2023.

St Colman’s: D Collins (Kilworth); J Batterberry (Ballycastle Gaels), J Mullery (Fermoy), B Ryan (Watergrasshill); D Barry (Watergrasshill), Cathal Barry (Bride Rovers), D Fitzgerald (Bride Rovers); F O’Driscoll (Bride Rovers), J Counihan (Watergrasshill); Cormac Barry (Bride Rovers), R Donovan (Fermoy), C O’Riordan (Bride Rovers); O Hegarty (Kilworth), T McCarthy (Watergrasshill), A Lardner (Castlelyons).  Subs: J O’Keeffe (Fermoy), S McCarthy (Castlelyons), K Watts (Kilworth).

TUS Munster Post Primary Schools Under-17A Hurling Championship – Dean Ryan Cup.

CBC Cork 2-15 Thurles CBS 2-9.

Christian Brothers College Cork reached their first ever Dean Ryan Cup final defeating Thurles CBS in Bansha.  This is their third ever win in this competition as they are only establishing themselves at this age bracket.  They now play Ardscoil Rís in the final.  Khaled Abdelrazik, Castlelyons one of our stars in under sixteen hurling and football teams is having a great year in goals for CBC Cork.  We wish him and CBC the very best in the final.

Dr. Harty Cup - Under 19 A Hurling in Castlelyons.

We hosted a Round three game between Blackwater, Community College Lismore and John the Baptist Community College, Hospital on Wednesday last.  The Lismore outfit led all through and qualified for the quarter finals even though Hospital kept in the game.  Thanks to all the stewards and the local Gardaí who helped on the occasion to make the occasion a success as there was a large crowd.

GAA – Garda Vetting.

Garda Vetting through the GAA is a statutory requirement under the National Vetting Bureau (Children & Vulnerable Persons) Act 2012-2016 for the mandatory vetting of persons who wish to undertake certain activities relating to children or vulnerable persons. In the GAA any person who carries out a role of responsibility such as coaching, managing or training underage teams that contain any player under 18 yrs. of age must be vetted. It also applies to organising underage activities or refereeing underage games.  An individual or unit deemed to breach the requirement may face a non-compliance sanction under our Child Safeguarding Policy.  Garda vetting is non- transferable to other organisations and Garda Vetting from other organisations cannot be accepted by the GAA.

The Act also provides for vetting of persons under 18 years of age. The Act states that if a person in respect of whom an application for a vetting disclosure is made is under 18 years of age, a declaration of consent (Parent/Guardian Consent Form) is completed on his or her behalf by a parent or guardian of the person.

To apply please download and complete the application form from GAA.ie and together with a copy of photo ID (driving licence or passport, etc) and a copy proof of address take them in person to our Club Children’s Officer.  Then our Club Children’s Officer who is the validator will advise on next steps.  The full details and documents can be found in GAA.ie.  Vetting and the Safeguarding for the Cúl Camps is vital.  It is advisable to get this done in the next few weeks as there will be a flood of applications in the New Year causing a delay.
