Castlelyons GAA notes week ending 16.2.26. 2026-02-17 10:41:00

Castlelyons Under 14 hurlers first on the field this year.

Our under fourteen hurlers were first out for a game on the field this year as they played Fermoy in a lively challenge game last Monday evening.  Despite the poor weather it was dry for the game and the pitch was in good condition.  Fermoy looked very strong as they a lot of hurlers on the age whereas our lads were very young.  However, one would have to be impressed by many of our lads in that standard of hurling.  Well done boys and to their management who are making progress with this group and will certainly secure the future of hurling in Castlelyons.

Castlelyons junior and senior hurling panels in training.

There was a fine turnout for training on Sunday morning as both junior and senior panels trained on our new pitch.  Ger McCarthy and Willie Casey, lads with plenty of experience, have taken up management of our junior team this year and they intend to add another selector later.  Our junior team are first into competitive stuff as they play Bride Rovers in the East Cork JHL Division One on Monday the 23rd of February in Castlelyons at 7.30pm with Niall O’Neill an réiteoir.  Bride Rovers have a very strong side and were in the East Cork final last year so there will be nothing handy here, but we are looking forward to a good game.

Some of our boys training on Sunday morning with selectors taking stock and at the back our new Hurling Wall completed and Astro Pitch under construction.  This Pitch will be complete in a few weeks.

Cleaning the Dressing Rooms.

The condition and cleanliness of our dressing rooms has left a bit to be desired in recent times.  Thanks to Assumpta Mangan and her team of Fás CE workers she has now made arrangements to assist and thanks to Joe Moran too.  However, players and those managing various teams must ensure that they clean up after games and training and that applies to the Gym as well.  The famous rugby team the ‘All Blacks’ set standards of fostering humility, responsibility and discipline some years ago by requiring their players, including superstars, to clean their dressing rooms after every match. This work ensures that they leave the place clean and reinforces the fact that no one is above serving the team. It would be great if all teams using our dressing rooms adopted that practice too.

Photo shows Aaron Smith capped 124 times for the All Blacks cleaning the Dressing room. True leadership isn't giving orders, it is setting the standards.
