Heroic display by U16's in championship

Killeagh St Ita's 2-16 Castlelyons 2-10

On last Sunday night the 5th Castlelyons U16 Hurlers took on Killeagh Ita's in the first round of the U16 Hurling Championship. This Killeagh Ita's team were playing Premier Hurling last year and are one of the favourites to win the County this year.

Castlelyons were missing two of their regular starters last Sunday and amazingly had only one sub on duty, 13 year old Gavin O’Neill. Killeagh Ita's had a very strong panel with numerous subs and it was this factor that really assisted in the second half as they could call on fresh strong subs to finally win the day.

John Paul Murphy had a good game in the U16 game v KilleaghIn ideal weather conditions  and a strong home following matched it can be said by Killeagh supporters both teams served up the proverbial ‘cracker’ to the enjoyment of all.

Killeagh Ita's played with the breeze in the first half and took a 5 point lead at one stage, with all their points coming from frees. However, Castlelyons lads were always competitive and despite registering some narrow wides they fought back excellently to be only 2 points behind at the break. Our goal in this half came from Jack Kenny with the points coming from Seamus Moroney (2), Mark Spillane (2) and Barry Murphy (1).

The second half started in whirlwind fashion with Castlelyons lads enjoying a lot of possession and getting 3 points in the first 8 minutes to go a point up. Killeagh came back and scored four pointed frees in a row to put them ahead by two on the 15 minute mark. Castlelyons lads fought back and after sustained pressure goaled in the 20th minute to go a point ahead again. At this point Killeagh were able to bring on fresh legs and Castlelyons lads were visibly tiring. However a couple of points from Castlelyons had them within a point of Killeagh with only 5 minutes to play.  Killeagh finished that bit stronger and goaled with 5 minutes remaining.

Castlelyons lads battled to the end but had to give way to a fresher Killeagh Ita's combination at the end of a great hours hurling. Killeagh Ita's scored 11 points from frees, and while some of these seemed harsh, they had an excellent free taker who punished Castlelyons repeatedly. Our goal in this half came from Shane Flynn with the points coming from Barry Murphy (3) and Mark Spillane (2). With a full team there's no doubt that Castlelyons would have given Killeagh Ita's an even closer game but the lads that were available on Sunday night can be proud of their performance as they played some excellent hurling and battled, against the odds, right to the final whistle. Final result on the night: Castlelyons 2-10, Killeagh Ita's 2-16.

No doubt all had a great week at the Cul Camp with a record 162 children taking part this year: 83 boys & 79 girls. Particular thanks to the coordinators, Dave Hegarty & Orla Hallihan, and the trainers for all their effort and planning that went into this year’s event. Dave and Orla put in massive work in the background and it is a tribute to them that this week grows in popularity annually.
