Team Managements for 2020.

They say leadership is doing the right things and management is doing things right. Well our club officers in both adult and juvenile have worked hard and done the best in arranging management for the various teams in 2020 over the last few weeks.  No doubt they will be forming, storming, norming and performing with the emphasis later performing in all the various championships.  The following is the line-up.

Premier Intermediate Hurling: Ciarán McGann (Manager) with Selectors Peter Murphy & Sean Kenny. Coach Johnny Crowley and Stats Dave Hoare.  All the lads here Ciarán, Peter, Sean and Dave have played at all levels for Castlelyons over the years and gained a lot of experience along the way with Johnny Crowley from Glanmire giving a hand at the coaching.  With a bit of commitment from all there is potential to be in the shake up later in the year.

Junior B Hurling:  We done very well in this grade last year and should have a relatively good selection again for the coming year.  However we do not have a manager to date.

Junior Football: We have given very little to the big ball over the last few years and, in fact, we are just playing championship and not taking part in the league in 2020.  No Manager to date.

Under 21 Hurling & Football: Gerald McCarthy & Com Barry.  Both lads have played most grades with Castlelyons and Gerald has Junior, Intermediate medals and played senior while Colm is after a three in a row with Imokilly.

Minor: Willie Casey & Pat “Magic” O’Neill. Both Willie and Pat are wily characters and not afraid to seek assistance as they engaged top men from the adult team last year in Niall O Leary and Alan Fenton to assist them and won the Rebel Óg East hurling and went well in the county section.  I have no doubt they are planning already.

U16: Pat O’Sullivan & Donal O’Callaghan. Pat has been with the juveniles for a few years and has plenty of experience as had Donal who is secretary of the juvenile club.

U14: John Leech & George Leech. Father and son combo here.  John a Mayo man and football fanatic certainly knows the game and George played his way up the ranks in Castlelyons winning many medals along the way.  These lads are in the know

U12: Shane O’Neill & Damien Fleming. Shane O Neill was the Juvenile Coaching Officer for several years before hand over the reins to Colm Barry this year. Shane has played at all levels with the club from his juveniles and gathered many medals on the journey. Damien from Barryroe is in the area for a few years.  He played at all level for Barry and with the Cork Minors.

U11: Shane Hickey & Stephen O’Riordan. Two very experienced men in charge here as Shane has played at all levels for the Club in hurling and football and was involved in both coaching and management of adult teams recently.  Stephen O Riordan has played a lot for the Muskerry club Gleann na Laoi before coming to Castlelyons and again bring plenty of experience.

U9/10: Simon Barry, Declan Wallace & Kieran Barrett.  Now here we go again with tons of experience as we have Kerryman Declan Wallace a man of skill & steel who helped us to a county senior hurling semi-final and Kieran Barrett with played all grades including senior hurling with us.  Simon Barry was with Fermoy and he brings some massive training and organisational methods from his working background.

U7/8: Conor Hayes & Shane O’Neill.  Shane O Neill as profiled above is also helping with the Under 7’s and 8’s with Conor Hayes who is in his first year in charge.

U6: TBC.

Thanks to all the lads for coming forward and volunteering to coach the teams as without volunteers, clubs and the GAA cannot function.  This is a most important year for our Club as we are embarking on a major development so if there is anyone out there who can help please contact our club officers.

Castlelyons Poc Fada – the best to date.

Our Juvenile hosted the Annual Poc Fada on a beautiful and sunny St Stephens morning with a record 42 teams taking part. Thanks to Dave Hegarty who took some photographs and the winners and results courtesy of Donal O Callaghan were as follows: -

Juvenile team winners

1st: - Robyn Hickey, Oran Hickey, Eanna Cotter and Evann Cotter. 2nd: - Matthew Rosner, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Cian O’Callaghan and Arron Fenton

Mixed Team winners

1st: -Timmy McCarthy, Sam McCarthy and Tomas McAuliffe (just a 3-man team). 2nd: - Declan Wallace, Ryan Wallace, Robbie Wallace and Dylan Barrett

The crowd returned to a packed Peddlars Rock Lounge Bar later for some welcome refreshments. Chairman of the Juvenile Club Declan Spillane presented the prizes and thanked the large attendance for supporting the event.  Of course, later there was a huge crowd of Liverpool fans cheering on the 0-4 result over Leicester.  I don’t know if the local fan club are part of the ‘Spirit of Shankly’ or what but by all accounts, they fairly sang, and United fans were not impressed.  Then to cap of Stephen’s Night Eoin Murphy had Peddlars rocking to the rafters with his hits, ballads and a selection of Liverpool anthems.

East Cork Board Fundraising Draw.

Tickets are now on sale for the East Cork Board (Imokilly) fundraising draw.  First prize is two Premium Tickets in the centre of Páirc Uí Chaoimh for all GAA matches played there in 2020 with free entry to a premium Lottery for All Ireland tickets when Cork are involved. The second prize is €200 cash and third prize €100.  Tickets are €10 with €6 to your club and €4 to the East Cork Board.  So, an ideal way to make a few bob for your club while supporting the Board.  Remember there are four county senior medals going to Castlelyons this year though our own hurlers involvement with the three in a row champions so we would ask you to be generous in support.

Did Castlelyons make Norwich Star famous.

Adam Idah is currently hitting the headlines in English soccer with Norwich as he banged in a hat trick in the FA Cup. Adam is just turned 18 years and Cork born.  He played with Scoil Niocláis against Castlelyons in the DFI Final some years ago.  We were three goals up in a short time but a massive come back led by young Adam Idah who scored 3-1 for them saw Scoil Niocláis take the title. Idah oozed class as a footballer but fair play to John Paul Murphy he stopped a few rockets from him to keep us in the game, but we lost 4-3 to 3-3.  Overall, we had a good team and Idah was the difference but a lot of our lads from that game are now starring with the club teams.  The question is was this Adam Idah’s first hat trick he might think of the boys and ask them all to Carrow Road.

Congratulations to Colm Barry.

I note that over the Christmas time the eminent sports John Horgan was requested by his Sports Editor to pick the fifteen best Cork players in the county senior hurling championship over the last decade and  had no hesitation in selecting  our own Colm Barry for the full back position.  This is due to Colm’s reliability, consistency and in helping Imokilly win a historic three in a row senior titles. Well done Colm.
