Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 12.10.20 2020-10-14 22:14:00

Castlelyons Weekly Lotto now temporary suspended due move to Level 3 Covid.

Please note that our Lotto is now temporarily suspended until further notice due to entering Level 3 of the Covid Restrictions. Club members and sellers please advise your friends of this temporary suspension. We will be back again when there is a return to level 2 of the Covid restrictions.  We will be back with that €20,000 Jackpot sooner rather than later hoping that we can control Covid. Thanks to all for your great support and patience as always and we really appreciate it.

Castlelyons Club Annual General Meeting 2020.

Notwithstanding this most unusual year with limits on attendances and crowds we can still hold an Annual General Meeting. The GAA have now issued a circular and now say there is a need for a quorum for the 2020 AGM. The example is given that where club membership is greater than 100 then 20 members will constitute a quorum for general business. It is appreciated it may not be practical for various reasons for a club to hold its AGM physically or virtually in the big clubs. So, then an ‘incorporeal’ AGM is acceptable within Rule and where the club is confident that business can be carried out transparently and within rule.  One advice is that 2020 is not the year for contentious motions. It is also is circulated that the following provisions shall apply to the election of officers to the Executive Committee for 2021.

Where a club has a limit on the length of time an officer may hold a position and that officer is due to retire at the 2020 AGM, the Executive Committee may appoint that same officer to serve until the 2021 AGM subject to the following conditions.

  • There are no other nominations for the position.
  • The vacancy still arises after the conclusion of the AGM.
  • The Executive Committee is unable to find a suitable replacement.

There is a full methodology set out for the transaction of normal AGM business whether incorporeal, virtually, or normal. This will be explained in more detail on direction from Castlelyons Executive Executive who will also set the date of the AGM which will be in November or early December.

Inter County Games and Attendances.

While we are in Level 3 Inter County games will be played but must be played behind closed doors. The position with respect to the 6 Counties is currently being reviewed – further guidance for both jurisdictions on spectator arrangements (if any) will issue in due course for the Allianz Leagues, Provincial and All Ireland Championships.  Hopefully, we will have a feast of winter games as the counties are preparing for battle already.  Most of the games are televised so you can take your pick. Cork footballers are down the odds a bit for the All-Ireland, but they could surprise a few.  The hurlers are down a bit too but maybe this is their year.  One suspects that the ground will be fairly heavy, so the advice is stop talking about wristy hurling and get stuck into the game.  The wristy stuff did not get us many trophies this last few years but there are some hardy lads coming through so don’t speak too soon. Our man Colm Spillane is making a good recovery from the most unfortunate hand injury in the county final and Niall O Leary will have some time to recover from a leg injury but hopefully both will be in the mix for Cork and if any of the management team were present at our five championship games there were two others Castlelyons players looking the part but we must sit that one out a while.

It is said winter is a time for comfort, good food and warmth, a friendly chat, and a talk beside the fire. However, now the advice for these Covid times is buy a good warm coat and get out as much as possible in the fresh air even meet the friends outside for the coffee but no shaking hands. We cannot go to the games so let’s get out early for the exercise and the coffee.  Later on enjoy some exciting frosty evening games at the fireside with the hurling and the big ball on the television.

Cork Board will complete 2020 Championship Programme as soon as possible.

The Cork County Board intend to complete the 2020 programme of games when circumstances allow and the CCC will reschedule outstanding fixtures as soon as possible, subject to prevailing government restrictions, GAA guidelines and inter-county championship fixtures. Training is permitted under the Level 3 guidelines

  • All underage training must be on a non-contact basis in pods of up to 15.
  • Adult teams can continue to train as normal.
  • All clubs and players are reminded that Health Questionnaires and all other relevant control measures must continue to be followed for club training.

Launch of Rebel's Bounty Postponed.

As reported a few weeks ago the traditional Cork GAA Club’s draw is being replaced by a revamped ‘Rebel’s’ Bounty’.  This has been requested by clubs all over the county with some time as they deeded the old-style draw was gone stale. The new-look draw will offer €500,000 in prizes to be shared across Cork.

The board promises that the scheme is designed to ensure clubs get a fairer distribution of funding based on sales. The proposed new system is designed to maximise return to clubs and is part of the overall drive to raise revenue for reinvestment at local and county level. It will also give clubs an opportunity to generate funds at a time when traditional methods are restricted because of COVID-19.   However, both at local level and among a number of clubs there was concern expressed that there was not enough consultation about this draw and that each club had to sell a lot of tickets before making any profit.

However, the launch of Rebels' Bounty scheduled for Sunday next has been postponed. It will now be launched in late 2019 / early 2020 and a meeting of Cork County Committee, which will be devoted solely to this item, will be held when circumstances allow. This will allow Bord time to comprehensively outline the benefits of the initiative for clubs and to seek formal approval. There will be an extensive communication drive with clubs in the interim.

Congratulations to Fitzgerald Butchers at Fermoy.

Congratulations to former star player, great supporter and one of our sponsors for the county final Mr Barry Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Butchers at Fermoy. He was recently awarded a bronze trophy for their lean steak stir fry at the Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards.  The results were announced online this year in what is a highly competitive competition to win gold, silver, and bronze as over 2500 products were entered. Well done to Barry and his staff so give them a call for great choice in the best quality meats.
